WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 4, 2023
- New South Wales, Australia received some welcome rain Tuesday and earlier today and the precipitation will wind down today
- Western Australia is expected to be drier than usual for another ten days and possibly two weeks raising crop moisture stress while winter crops reproduce
- Russia and Ukraine dryness will continue for another week, although some forecast models have suggested better rain potentials in the second week of the outlook
- Argentina rainfall the past two days has improved topsoil moisture slightly in the driest areas and much more rain is needed before winter crops are going to improve significantly
- Argentina still needs greater rain to support early corn and sunseed planting conditions
- Europe will be dry biased in the west and south for at least another week to ten days
- Frost and freezes are expected in far eastern Europe, Ukraine and far western Russia, although the impact on crops will be minimal
- Frost and freezes in Canada and the northern half of the U.S. Plains Friday and Saturday will finally end the growing season and help to expedite harvesting
- Rain in the central U.S. Plains Tuesday and today will prove to be a little disappointing in the west-central and northwestern hard red winter wheat production region and greater rain will be needed soon
- Southwestern Canada’s Prairies will remain drought stricken for an extended period of time
- Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan, Canada have received some welcome rain recently delaying summer crop maturation and harvesting, but improving the moisture profile for crop use in the spring of 2024; additional rain and some snow is expected into Friday
- Heavy rain has begun in Rio Grande do Sul overnight and waves of it will continue in most of southern Brazil through the coming week eventually causing some flooding and raising deeper concerns about winter wheat conditionss
- Center west Brazil soybean production areas will experience a more erratic rainfall pattern for the next week which may slow seed germination and plant emergence
- Southern parts of Indonesia remain dry while the remainder of Southeast Asia has favorable soil moisture
- Typhoon Koinu will move across southern Taiwan later today producing torrential rain, flooding and strong wind possibly damaging a small part of the island’s crops and property before moving on to the southeastern China coast this weekend

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 3, 2023
- The single most important rain event of the season will impact New South Wales, Australia wheat, barley and canola areas today and Wednesday bolstering soil moisture and improving yield potentials
- Western Australia will continue too dry
- Frost and freezes in Canada’s Prairies and the northern U.S. Plains will end the growing season Friday and Saturday with some frost and lighter freezes expected in the northern Midwest Saturday and Sunday
- Argentina’s western crop areas will continue too dry, despite some showers today and Wednesday in the southwest
- Interior southern Brazil rainfall is expected to become frequent and heavy at times from northern Rio Grande do Sul to Parana during the coming week resulting in 3.00 to 9.00 inches of rain and possibly more
- The rain will threaten wheat quality and delay the planting of corn, soybeans, rice and cotton
- Mato Grosso rainfall is expected to be sporadic and light over the next ten days raising concern over soybean planting and emergence, although progress is expected to continue
- India’s monsoon has ended in the northwest half of the nation and rain in this coming week will be greatest in the far eastern states
- China will continue too wet from Shaanxi, Sichuan and Hubei into Yunnan over this next five days
- Beneficial rain is expected in southeastern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada along with a part of the northeastern U.S. Plains and upper Midwest today and into Friday morning resulting in improved topsoil moisture that will be of use to crops in 2024
- Portions of U.S. hard red winter wheat areas will not receive sufficient rainfall in the coming week to seriously raise soil moisture, but enough rain will fall to briefly improve emergence and establishment
- Southern Indonesia remains quite dry with little change likely
- Typhoon Koinu will move through southern Taiwan Wednesday resulting in some torrential rain and wind damage in rice and sugarcane areas; the storm will ultimately end up in eastern Guangdong, China this weekend

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 2, 2023
- Rain will fall in the eastern Canada Prairies during mid-week this week after occurring in the west during the weekend
- The moisture will raise soil moisture for crop use in the spring
- U.S. Midwest and Great Plains rainfall this week will be brief enough to benefit some winter crop areas with improved soil moisture and then return favorable harvest weather with dry conditions resuming
- Frost and freezes will impact Canada’s Prairies and the northern U.S. Plains and upper Midwest during mid- to late-week this week
- U.S. Delta and southeastern states will be dry for the next week to possibly ten days
- Argentina weather will continue poor for western winter crop areas where dryness will prevail, despite some showers this week
- Interior southern Brazil will turn wet during the middle to latter part of this week through next week with some rising potential for flooding once again in time
- Center west Brazil rainfall will be erratic, although beneficial for some crops and less so for others
- Center South Brazil will be favorably moist for planting and early season crop development
- China weather will be mostly good for summer crop maturation and harvesting as well as winter wheat planting
- The exception will be form Shaanxi and Hubei through Sichuan to Yunnan where rain will fall frequently this week delaying farming activity
- India will be dry in the northwest half of the nation while rain falls in other areas
- Southeastern Australia rainfall is expected to be moderate to heavy from eastern Victoria to the heart of New South Wales Tuesday through Thursday
- Sufficient rain is expected in New South Wales to greatly improve winter wheat, barley and canola yields
- Central and southern Europe will be dry over the next week to ten days favoring fieldwork, but rain is needed for winter crops

- China’s weather will be drier except from Sichuan, Shaanxi and Hubei into Yunnan where rain is likely this week

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPTEMBER 29, 2023
- Southeastern Australia rainfall Monday into Wednesday of next week will be welcome and good for maintaining abundant soil moisture in Victoria, but more important to reproducing and pre-reproductive crops in New South Wales where some improved yield potential may result
- Southwestern Australia will continue slowly drying down
- Queensland and northern New South Wales, Australia dryland summer crop areas may not be planted for a while until significant rain falls
- Argentina rainfall over the next ten days remains lighter than usual and unlikely to seriously change drought status
- India’s monsoon continues to withdraw with the northwestern half of the nation moving into its annual dry season
- Brazil’s center south crop areas will be trending wetter next week and staying that way through the middle of October improving first corn, cotton and soybean planting conditions
- Far southern Brazil will trend much wetter again in the Oct. 6-12 period while this first week of the month is a little drier biased
- Ukraine and Russia’s Southern Region as well as the lower Volga River Basin will continue drier than usual through much of the coming week with only a limited amount of relief in the Oct. 6-12 period
- Europe precipitation in the coming ten days will mostly be confined to the North and Baltic Sea regions leaving many areas in the south and east quite dry and in need of winter crop planting moisture
- Too much rain is expected in China from eastern Sichuan and southern Shaanxi to western Henan and Hubei in the coming week resulting in field working delays and possible flooding
- Other areas in China will see a good mix of rain and sunshine
- Central and southern Indonesia will remain unusually dry for the next ten days
- Cold air that had been previously advertised in North America has be reduced in the past day or two
- Upper U.S. Midwest and northeastern Plains will be wettest next week while the eastern Midwest, Delta and southeastern states are dry; second week rainfall will increase in the eastern Midwest and interior southeastern states leaving the central Midwest dry
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas will get some rain this weekend and more likely next week; its coverage may not be uniform leaving some areas dry biased
- Texas is wetter for next week possibly delaying fieldwork and impacting open boll cotton fiber quality
- Canada’s Prairies will be wettest late this weekend and early next week favoring the east and causing brief field working delays
- Mexico rain may increase late next week and into the following weekend

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPTEMBER 28, 2023
- Western Argentina rainfall prospects remain poor for at least the next ten days
- Brazil’s center west crop areas will experience a slowly increasing shower and thunderstorm pattern beginning next week and lasting through the following weekend and probably into mid-month
- Center south Brazil rainfall will begin to increase greatly this weekend and next week with coffee areas of Sul de Minas, northeastern Sao Paulo, Zona da Mata and southern Cerrado Mineiro most favored
- Some first season corn and soybean planting and emergence will benefit from this rain as will the flowering of citrus and early season sugarcane development
- Far southern Brazil will benefit from net drying conditions over the next several days and then turn wetter again late next week
- Ukraine, Russia’s Southern Region and middle and lower Volga River Basin will be dry for one more week and then “some” showers will develop favoring eastern Ukraine and the middle Volga River Basin with light rainfall; greater rain will still be needed
- Europe rainfall will be limited over the next week, although it will not be completely dry; there is need for rain in most of the east and south
- China’s greatest rain will fall from Sichuan to western Henan during the next week with delays to harvesting and planting likely and there may be “some potential” for flooding
- Wet weather is also expected in far southern China while a favorable mix of weather is likely elsewhere in the nation
- Australia rainfall will remain confined to the south with the southeast part of the nation getting most of the precipitation; greater rain is needed over a larger part of the south to adequately support winter crops as they approach and move into reproduction

- Western Argentina rainfall prospects remain poor for at least the next week and probably for ten days
- Model divergence for Brazil’s center west crop areas is high today with the GFS notably drier during the coming ten days than the ECMWF; a compromise between the two models will be needed in today’s forecasts with some gradual increase in shower frequency and intensity expected over the next two weeks favoring Oct. 5-11 over that of this first week
- Center south Brazil rainfall will begin to increase greatly this weekend and next week with coffee areas of Sul de Minas, northeastern Sao Paulo, Zona da Mata and southern Cerrado Mineiro most favored
- Far southern Brazil will benefit from net drying conditions over the next five or six days
- Ukraine, Russia’s Southern Region and middle and lower Volga River Basin will be dry for one more week and the “some” showers will develop favoring eastern Ukraine and the middle Volga River Basin with light rainfall; greater rain will still be needed

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPTEMBER 26, 2023
- Some rain may develop in Argentina’s dry region late next week and into the following weekend; but, until then precipitation should be restricted
- Center west Brazil rainfall is still advertised to be restricted over the next full week limiting planting moisture from Mato Grosso into Goias and northern Mato Grosso do Sul
- Some increase in shower activity will occur during the second week of the outlook
- Center south Brazil rainfall is expected to begin increasing this weekend and continue next week with some significant rain possible from Parana to Minas Gerais and southern Mato Grosso do Sul in time
- Southern Brazil, Uruguay and northeastern Argentina will remain plenty moist over the next ten days to two weeks
- Recent rainfall was favorable for South Africa winter crops and a little more will occur in this coming week, although more would be welcome
- South Australia rainfall will remain restricted through the coming weekend, but next week looks wetter in both the southwest and southeast
- Not much rain is expected in northern crop areas and temperatures will be warmer than usual in much of the nation
- Europe precipitation will be dry biased for a while supporting fieldwork of all kinds
- Some locally heavy rain is expected in Greece over the next two days
- Russia’s Southern Region, middle and lower Volga River Basin and eastern Ukraine rainfall should be minimal for the next ten days
- Heavy rain will return to Georgia this weekend through much of next week with some of the rain to bleed over the Russia border
- Another round of heavy rain is expected from Sichuan to Henan and Jiangsu, China during the second half of this week through the first half of next week
- A favorable mix of rain and sunshine is expected elsewhere in China over the next two weeks
- Xinjiang, China harvest weather will remain good for the next ten days in the primary cotton areas
- Some frost is expected tonight in far northeastern Xinjiang with little to no negative impact on crops
- Western Canada will trend colder and wetter this weekend into next week slowing fieldwork at times
- U.S. rainfall through Thursday will be greatest from Minnesota and Wisconsin to Ohio and Kentucky while net drying occurs in most other areas until next week
- There will be some additional rain in the upper Midwest briefly this weekend

- South Africa rainfall during the weekend improved wheat, barley and canola conditions from Western through Eastern Cape and in some southern Northern Cape locations as well as a few southwestern Free State locations
- Russia’s Southern Region and Ukraine will continue drier than usual over the coming week to ten days
- Southern Australia rainfall stays limited this week, although some showers of light intensity will occur in many areas
- India’s weather will remain active in the central, southern and eastern parts of the nation this week with less precipitation next week
- China will remain a little too wet from Sichuan To western Henan and in the far south while a better mix of rain and sunshine occurs in other areas
- Frost may impact far northeastern Xinjiang, China during mid-week this week and in far northeastern China Friday
- Central and northern Vietnam is being impacted by heavy rainfall from a tropical Depression that will move inland north of Hue between 1800 and 2300 GMT today
- Europe will experience drier weather this week favoring all kinds of fieldwork
- Western Argentina will continue struggling for “significant” rain, although a few showers will be possible early this week and again during the second half of next week
- Center west and center south Brazil will experience scattered showers of lighter than usual intensity late this week and into next week
- Far southern Brazil will continue wet over the next ten days
- Southern Indonesia will continue drier than usual over the next ten days
- U.S. Central and southwestern Plains will not get much moisture this workweek
- U.S. Midwest weather will be wettest from Minnesota and Wisconsin to Ohio and Kentucky early this week with another couple of rounds of rain this weekend and again next week maintaining wet field conditions in Minnesota, Wisconsin and possibly a few eastern Dakota locations
- Net drying is expected in the southeastern states and a large part of the northern Delta as well as the west-central and southwestern Corn Belt during the next ten days
- Waves of rain are likely in the U.S. Pacific Northwest through early next week
- Canada’s Prairies and a part of the far northwestern U.S. Plains may experience frost and freezes in the first week to ten days of October

- Concern remains over dryness in Australia, Ukraine, western Argentina and southern Russia from a winter crop planting perspective
- Portions of east-central and far southern China will remain too wet
- Center west Brazil rainfall does not look very great over the next two weeks, despite some increase in showers next week
- Center south Brazil weather will trend wetter next week
- U.S. harvest and crop maturation weather looks favorable, despite some infrequent rain and that which occurred in the northern Plains and western Corn Belt during the weekend
- Canada’s Prairies may trend briefly wetter next week before temperatures turn colder with frost and freezes finally occurring in the first week of October
- West Africa will stay wet
- Southern Indonesia will remain dry
- Mainland areas of Southeast Asia reported poor rainfall during the weekend
- Tropical depression is expected to bring rain to central Vietnam this week
- Tropical Storm Ophelia produced heavy rain in North Carolina, Virginia and the Delmarva Peninsula causing some flooding, but not much damaging wind occurred except along the immediate coast
