WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 16, 2023
- Western Australia will be dry for one more week; there is some potential for rain in the October 24-30 period
- Queensland and northern New South Wales as well as South Australia will be dry for ten days
- Northern India and parts of Pakistan rainfall early this week will be ideal for autumn planting and emergence, although some unharvested cotton may experience a little fiber discoloring because of the rain
- Andhra Pradesh, India will continue too dry while other areas in southern India get some rain this week
- Western Europe will turn notably wetter beginning Thursday of this week and continuing through all of next week
- Europe’s middle and lower Danube River Basin will receive limited rainfall over the next ten days keeping some winter crop areas dry while supporting aggressive fieldwork; including the harvest of summer crops and the planting of winter grain
- Portions of Russia’s Southern Region and Ukraine will trend wetter over the next ten days improving winter crop establishment as long as soil temperatures remain warm; some cooling is expected over the coming week to ten days
- China weather will remain favorably mixed for summer crop harvesting and winter crop planting
- Excessive rain and serious flooding occurred in central Vietnam during the weekend with Dan Nang reporting over 33.00 inches of rain since Friday and Hue reported nearly 20.00 inches
- Additional heavy rain is expected in central Vietnam this week causing more flooding or at least prolonging those conditions
- Brazil’s center west crop areas will continue to receive below normal rainfall and an erratic distribution of rain for at least another ten days
- Southern Brazil and southern Paraguay as well as a part of northeastern Argentina will get too much rain in the next ten days resulting in some flooding
- Central Argentina may receive some needed rain late this weekend into next week
- Southern Argentina could receive some needed rain next week as well
- U.S. weather will be mixed over the next ten days possibly slowing some summer crop harvest progress
- Rain is needed in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and hard red winter wheat production areas
- Canada’s Prairies will be trending cooler and wetter next week, but this week will be warm
- Ontario and Quebec summer harvest progress will remain slow due to waves of precipitation

- Torrential rain fell in Vietnam central coastal areas during the weekend with more coming
- Western Australia will stay dry for the next ten days
- Western Europe will turn much wetter later this week through next week
- Northern India is expecting some welcome rain for winter crop planting
- Argentina weather will continue drier biased for another week, but rain may increase next week
- Center west Brazil will receive erratic rain this week and may trend wetter late this month
- Southeastern Europe will be dry biased for the next ten days as it has been for a while
- Ukraine and Russia’s Southern Region will gradually trend wetter over the next two weeks easing long term dryness
- New tropical cyclone may evolve in the tropical Atlantic Ocean this week while Tropical Depression Sean dissipates
- Tropical cyclone may evolve in the eastern Pacific Ocean later this week and my move across central or interior northern Mexico early next week
- Northern U.S. Midwest was wet during the weekend as expected
- Lower eastern U.S. Midwest is drier for this week than previously suggested

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 13, 2023
- Brazil and northern Argentina weather is still advertised to trend wetter in the last week of this month, but there is reason to be skeptical of the computer forecasts due to their tendency to follow climatology in the longer range forecasting.
- A boost in precipitation is expected, although its significance is going to be debated for a while
- A close watch on the Amazon River Basin weather is warranted for a clue as to when and if improved rain will reach center west Brazil
- Western Australia will remain too dry for reproducing and filling winter wheat, barley and canola over the next ten days
- Queensland, Australia dryness will prevail for the next two weeks leaving dryland summer crop fields unplanted for a while longer
- Argentina’s drought remains for a while longer, but may get some relief near and beyond mid-month
- Center west Brazil rainfall is expected to continue erratic into late month; many areas are too dry, despite scattered showers
- Southern Brazil remains much too wet and waves of rain will continue threatening wheat quality and delaying summer crop planting
- Southern Indonesia drought conditions remain serious with little chance for change
- Northern India may get some beneficial planting moisture late this weekend into next week for winter crop areas, although it will be light; some delay to early season harvest progress is expected and there may be “some” concern over cotton quality

- Center west Brazil may see some increasing rainfall during the second week of the two week forecast
- Southern Brazil remains much too wet and waves of rain will continue
- Southern Indonesia drought conditions remain serious with little chance for change
- Hurricane Lidia moved through Nayarit and northwestern Jalisco overnight producing torrential rain, flooding and very strong wind along the coast and up to 100 miles inland; the system has dissipated as a tropical cyclone this morning
- Remnant moisture from Hurricane Lidia’s and minor weather disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico will combine and bring rain to many U.S. Gulf of Mexico coastal areas later today and Thursday; heavy rain may impact northern Florida, southern Georgia and southeastern Alabama as a result of this
- Northern India may get some beneficial planting moisture late this weekend into next week for winter crop areas, although it will be light
- Andhra Pradesh, India is too dry and needs rain

- Some beneficial rain developed in northern Ukraine during the weekend to improve winter crop emergence and establishment, though there is need for much more rain
- Showers will occur periodically over the next ten days in Ukraine and Russia’s Southern Region, although daily rainfall is not likely to be very great and there may be an ongoing need for more moisture
- India will be dry biased over the next week except in the far south and extreme east
- Northern India may get some rain late this weekend and early next week to improve planting moisture for winter crops like wheat, rapeseed, millet and others
- Myanmar is expecting to see some improved rainfall to raise the nation’s moisture profile and improve late season crops this week
- Frequent heavy rain this week in Vietnam may lead to flooding from the Da Nang area through Hue and up the coast to the Red River; some areas may end up with 10-15 inches of rain and possibly more during the next week to ten days
- China will see more favorable planting and harvesting weather over the next ten days
- Europe weather will continue to include less than usual precipitation for portions of the central and south for at least another week
- Argentina’s western crop areas will continue drought stricken for a while longer, despite some infrequent shower activity
- Southern Brazil will continue too wet for the next ten days while center west brazil rainfall is expected to gradually improve during the second half of this month and in November
- Canada’s Prairies will experience good harvest weather over the coming week to ten days
- Southern U.S. Plains will be dry biased over the next two weeks
- U.S. Midwest rainfall will be significant Wednesday night into the weekend from Nebraska and southern South Dakota to Michigan
- Tropical Storm Lidia is expected to move into west-central Mexico as a hurricane and then dissipate Wednesday, although its remnant moisture will then move across the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast areas

- Not many surprises occurred during the weekend
- Rain fell beneficially in northern Ukraine and rain is still expected additionally there and in Russia’s Southern Region over the next ten days
- Western Australia will continue too dry
- Argentina will get a few showers, but no general soaking rain
- Heavy rain fell in southern Brazil during the weekend and a wetter bias will continue without such intensity in the rainfall
- U.S. harvest weather is good except for Wednesday through Friday of this week when rain is expected
- Rain and snow have evolved in eastern Ontario and Quebec as predicted
- Tropical Storm Lidia will become a hurricane tonight and the move through central Mexico during mid-week with some of its rain reaching southern Texas and the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast region later this week
- Eastern U.S. will be mild to cool in the next ten days while the west and in most of Canada’s Prairies are warmer than usual
- Southern Indonesia will continue too dry
- Myanmar will get some welcome rain in the coming ten days
- Northern India may get some needed rain later this month
- A new tropical disturbance off the west Africa coast may become a tropical cyclone this week, but it will stay over open water

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 6, 2023
- Needed precipitation is expected to arrive in Russia’s Southern Region and parts of Ukraine next week with the precipitation continuing periodically through mid-month
- Europe is expected to trend wetter in the second week of the forecast, Oct. 14-20 raising soil moisture for France, Germany and a few neighboring countries after persistent dryness
- Southeastern Europe may be slower in getting relief from dryness than other parts of the continent
- Australia weather will be dry biased during the next two weeks especially in Western Australia; Victoria will receive some periodic rain and remain the nation’s wettest state
- Argentina’s weather may trend a little wetter in the Oct. 14-20 period, but this first week of weather will only have some restricted shower activity
- Brazil’s center west crop region is advertised to receive greater rainfall starting in the second half of next week and continuing through mid-month
- Southern Brazil will continue quite wet in the coming week threatening wheat quality and delaying the planting of first corn, soybeans, rice and some cotton
- Canada’s Prairies drought will change little in the coming week, despite some mid-week showers likely during mid-week
- Hard freezes this morning from western Canada’s Prairies southward into Montana ended the growing season for some areas that have missed such conditions so far this season; otherwise, there was no significant impact
- Freezes will occur southward into Kansas tonight with hard freezes into Nebraska and a few immediate neighboring areas, but the impact will be minimal on unharvested crops and recently planting winter wheat
- Mexico will trend wetter next week as Tropical Storm Lidia moves inland and another tropical disturbance in the eastern Pacific Ocean pump moisture across the central and south parts of the nation
- U.S. Midwest weather should trend a little wetter in the second week of the forecast benefiting winter wheat, but delaying fieldwork for a brief period of time
- Typhoon Koinu will pass to the south of Hong Kong this weekend, but its peak wind speeds will stay far enough to the south to minimize any potential for port damage; Some shipping delay is to be expected though

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 5, 2023
- Moderate to severe drought continues across much of Mexico with Tropical Storm Lidia and possibly one other tropical disturbance possibly moving inland in western parts of the nation next week to offer some relief
- Southeastern Australia rainfall wound down Wednesday with two-day rain totals of 0.30 to 0.62 inch in the northern one-third of New South Wales and 0.60 to 1.61 inches in the southern two-thirds of the state; central Victoria received 1.41 to 3.27 inches of rain with the mountainous region of eastern Victoria getting 3.50 to 9.29 inches resulting in flooding
- Southeastern Queensland reported 0.05 to 0.47 inch of rain poor coverage of amounts over 0.30 inch
- Heavy rain and flooding occurred in southern Oklahoma into the Texas Blacklands and northeast into southwestern Arkansas overnight; rain totals of 3.00 to 9.86 inches occurred near the Texas/Arkansas border resulting in serious flooding
- Most of the Texas Blacklands and southern Oklahoma reported 2.00 to 3.00 inches with local totals over 4.00 inches
- Rain is expected to evolve in the driest areas of Ukraine and Russia’s Southern Region late this weekend and especially next week
- Western Australia will continue dry for at least another ten days
- Europe will continue drier biased in the west-central, southwest, central and far southeast during the next week
- U.S. central and eastern Midwest and eastern states will experience cooler weather and at least one bout of rain during the Oct. 13-19 period
- Canada’s Prairies will see dry and warmer weather after rain and wet snow end Friday morning in the east
- Typhoon Koinu impacted Taiwan in the past 24 hours with flooding rain and excessive wind and the system is now expected to be close to the southern China coast for a few days, but no landfall is presently expected
- Excessive rain and windy conditions will impact eastern Canada this weekend and early next week as Tropical Storm Philippe merges with an upper level low pressure system over Ontario and Quebec bringing fieldwork to a halt
- Frost and freezes will impact the central and northern U.S. Plains and Canada’s Prairies the next two nights, but no significant crop impact is expected
- Argentina dryness will remain despite a few showers early next week
- No changes are expected in Brazil with the south staying too wet in the coming week while center west crop areas see erratic rainfall of lighter than usual intensity
