WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 27, 2023
- Not many changes overnight
- Frost and a few light freezes occurred again Victoria and southeastern South Australia overnight resulting in pockets of possible damage to wheat, barley, canola and some pulse crops, though most of the damage was minimal
- Southern Brazil flooding is expected over the coming week as 4.00 to more than 10.00 inches of rain results over already saturated ground; replanting of some crops will be needed and some property damage is likely
- Center west Brazil rainfall will be restricted to scattered showers of light intensity in this first week of the forecast and then “some” increase in rainfall is possible in the second week
- Argentina weather has changed little overnight with showers and thunderstorms occurring erratically during the next week to ten days with some increase in rainfall during the second week of the forecast
- Europe will continue trending wetter with western parts of the continent eventually becoming a little too wet
- Southeastern Europe will be drier than usual in this first week of the forecast and then trend a little wetter
- Russia’s Southern Region and Ukraine will receive additional waves of rain and stay warm enough for winter crops to benefit from improving soil moisture, although southern Ukraine and a few southern areas of Russia’s Southern Region will need more rain
- Southern Indonesia rainfall will continue lighter than usual for an extended period of time
- Bitter cold in Canada and the northwestern U.S. Plains is poised to surge southeast this weekend and early next week with freezes occurring southward into central Texas, the Northern Delta and the northern Tennessee River Basin
- A wintry mix of precipitation is expected in U.S. hard red winter wheat areas this weekend to increase topsoil moisture in a few areas
- U.S. southeastern states and the lower Delta will remain dry for much of the coming week and possibly for ten days
- South Africa will receive some beneficial moisture for summer crop planting

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 26, 2023
- Frost and a few light freezes occurred in Victoria and southeastern South Australia overnight resulting in pockets of possible damage to wheat, barley, canola and some pulse crops; damage was suspected of being very low
- Excessive rain fell in central Texas overnight with 4.00 to 8.71 inches resulting from the big bend area of the Rio Grande through the Dallas and Fort Worth areas to southeastern Oklahoma resulting in widespread flooding
- The European forecast model has increased center west Brazil rainfall again late in this coming seven day period and especially during the second weekend of the two week forecast
- Some of this increase was overdone
- The GFS model run continues to downplay rainfall in center west Brazil over the next week to ten days and until the Amazon River Basin clouds up better and daily thunderstorms occur it is likely that the GFS is handling the situation better than the ECMWF
- Southern Brazil flooding is expected again Friday night through the middle part of next week as 4.00 to more than 10.00 inches of rain results over already saturated ground; replanting of some crops will be needed and some property damage is likely

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 25, 2023
- Hurricane Otis came inland near Acapulco, Mexico as a Category Five storm overnight producing peak wind speeds prior to landfall of 165 mph and confirmed speeds of 150 mph by the government of Mexico; widespread damage resulted
- Frost was noted this morning in Victoria, Australia this morning with very little permanent crop damage suspected. Freezes did occur in the higher elevated areas
- Victoria and southern New South Wales, Australia will be impacted by more widespread frost and a few light freezes Thursday morning that may negatively impact a few reproducing winter crops like wheat, barley and canola
- Rain fell significantly in central and west Texas cotton areas overnight where 1.00 to 3.53 inches of rain resulted in portions of the Rolling Plains and in a small part of the High and Low Plains; damage to the crop should not be very great, although fiber quality may have decreased
- ECMWF model reduced rain in center west Brazil for days 7-10 today relative to the past few days. That model has been too wet most of this week so far, but this change was a step in the right direction
- Second week rainfall increases are expected in center west Brazil, but it may take a while for a good distribution of “significant” rain to fall
- Hot temperatures and no rain again impacted center west Brazil Tuesday and that trend will prevail through the weekend and into next week, although a few showers will pop up periodically
- Not many other changes were noted in the world overnight
- Europe will remain wet except in the southeast where the lower Danube River Basin remains too dry
- Ukraine and Russia’s Southern Region will receive significant rain over the next week to ten days
- China and India weather looks quite favorable
- Southern Indonesia remains drier than usual, but a few more showers and thunderstorms are possible periodically
- Eastern South Africa will get some rain for summer crop planting late this weekend into next week
- Argentina will see some periodic showers that will help maintain status quo conditions after recent rain improved soil moisture
- Interior southern Brazil and southern Paraguay will become excessively wet this weekend into next week resulting in flooding
- Bitter cold will drop through western Canada to the U.S. Plains
- Freezes will reach West Texas cotton areas early next week to help defoliate crops
- Snow, cold rain and falling temperatures in the northern U.S. Plains will stress livestock and delay travel
- Western Australia will remain too dry for reproducing and filling crops

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 24, 2023
- Western Australia will continue to struggle with dryness l
- Central Pacific coastal areas of Australia will get rain in the coming week to ten days
- India will be generally dry for the next ten days, although some rain will fall in the far south
- Tropical Cyclone Hamoon will impact Bangladesh, Myanmar and some far Eastern States in India
- Europe will be quite wet over the next ten days except in the southeastern corner of the continent where dryness will prevail
- Rain will impact winter crop areas of Ukraine and Russia’s Southern Region over the next ten days improving crop establishment potential
- Argentina’s greatest rainfall is over for a while, although some periodic light shower and thunderstorm activity will be possible infrequently
- Center west Brazil will see some showers in the coming week, but much of the resulting rain will not counter evaporation very well
- Interior southern Brazil and southern Paraguay will receive too much rain this weekend into next week resulting in a new round of flooding
- Southern Indonesia will experience some periodic rainfall during the next couple of weeks, although resulting rainfall will be well below normal
- Southern China will receive waves of rain in the next week slowing fieldwork, but benefiting future rapeseed development
- Dry conditions elsewhere in China will be great for harvesting of summer crops and the planting of winter crops
- Bitter cold air will drop through western Canada to the northern U.S. Plains the remainder of this week inducing some snow that results in livestock stress and travel delays
- Some of the North America cold will settle into the central and southern Plains this weekend and early next week
- Warming is expected in western North America during the second week of the outlook while cool air spreads through the eastern parts of the continent
- South Africa’s summer crop areas will get some important rain this weekend and next week, although western areas may be missed
- Tropical Storm Otis may become a hurricane today and reach the Guerrero, Mexico coast as a weakening hurricane later this week
- Tropical Depression 21 will produce heavy rain in parts of Nicaragua and Honduras today and Wednesday with no significant crop damage resulting

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 23, 2023
- Excessive heat and dryness continued from northern Argentina to center west Brazil during the weekend with extreme highs of 100 to 111 Fahrenheit
- Rain fell in many areas in Argentina during the weekend and the precipitation was helpful for wheat development in the south and for future summer crop planting
- Brazil’s interior southern crop areas and Paraguay will see heavy rain late this week
- Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop in center west Brazil later this week and into next week easing excessive heat and dryness
- Concern about center west Brazil’s earlier planted summer crops remains because of excessive heat and limited rain and dry soil; some replanting will be necessary
- Beneficial moisture fell from northern Ukraine and Belarus into northern parts of Russia’s Southern Region and northwestern Kazakhstan during the weekend
- Western Europe will be trending wetter this week
- North Africa will get some beneficial rainfall this week
- Australia’s major crop areas will continue quite dry during the next ten days
- There is potential for frost and freezes in Victoria and far southern New South Wales, Australia later this week resulting in some potential for crop damage
- Snow will fall in southern Canada’s Prairies and the northern U.S. Plains with some snow also possible in northern and eastern parts of the U.S. Pacific Northwest k
- Bitter cold will follow this week’s snow event into the northern U.S. Plains, Pacific Northwest and Canada’s Prairies
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas will get significant rain this week especially from north-central Texas through central Oklahoma to eastern wheat areas of Kansas
- Southern Indonesia has been reporting scattered thunderstorms recently and that will continue for a while bringing some drought relief

- No big surprises occurred during the weekend
- Rain fell significantly in portions of Argentina easing long term dryness
- Brazil’s center west will remain dry early this week, but will see some increasing showers late this week and next week
- Center west rainfall will be greatest in November not over the next 10 days
- Argentina rainfall will lighten up and become infrequent and lighter later this week and next week
- Western Australia is still going to be dry
- Northern parts of Russia’s Southern Region, northern Ukraine and northwestern Kazakhstan received rain during the weekend and more is coming
- Snow will accumulate in southern Canada’s Prairies and the northern U.S. Plains this week ahead of unusually cold air
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas will get rain early to mid-week this week with snow in the northwest late this week and into the weekend
- Additional rain is expected next week
- The changes will improve winter crop establishment potentials
- Mississippi River Basin and a part of the lower Missouri River Basin will see relief from low water levels, although much more rain will be needed to remove draught restrictions
- Western Europe storminess will continue through the next ten days with rain eventually reaching into northeastern Europe leaving the Balkan Countries drier than usual

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 20, 2023
- Excessive heat and no rain fell in center west Brazil Thursday with highest temperatures in the range of 100 to 108 Fahrenheit
- The heat and dryness will continue in center west through early next week and then scattered showers and thunderstorms will begin to pop up periodically during the balance of next week
- Argentina weather is still looking wetter for much of the west-central, south and northeast during the next ten days bringing relief to persistent dryness; northwestern Argentina will be driest
- Southern Brazil will begin seeing waves of significant rain again during mid-week next week and that will continue through the following weekend; areas from Parana and Paraguay and Rio Grande do will be wettest along with parts of Uruguay and northeastern Argentina
- Center west Brazil rainfall is expected to slowly increase as time moves along late next week into the early days of November
- Western Australia dryness will persist into early November with showers mostly near the coast
- Queensland and northern New South Wales, Australia will continue too dry for unirrigated summer crop planting
- Victoria and southern New South Wales winter crops will remain in the best condition with the best potential yield
- Tropical Depression Sanba produced 18.89 inches of rain near the coast in southern Guangxi, China Thursday
- Russia’s Southern Region and Ukraine are expecting relief from weeks of dryness over the next ten days with sufficient moisture occurring to stimulate improved wheat, barley and rye establishment as long as temperatures stay warm
- Western Europe’s stormy weather will dominate the next five days with some of it expanding into central and northeastern areas late next week and into the following weekend
- The Lower Danube River Basin in southeastern Europe will remain dry
- India and China weather will remain mostly tranquil over the next two weeks, although rain will fall abundantly near and south of the Yangtze River.
- Waves of colder air expected in North America will put snow on the ground in Canada’s Prairies during mid-week next week and into the northern U.S. Plains late next week
- Frost and freezes will reach into the southwestern Plains a week from now and more likely in the following weekend
- Frost and freezes may also evolve in the lower Midwest with frost in the northern Delta possible in about ten days
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas will get rain during mid-week next week and it will be greatest from Texas to eastern Kansas and western Missouri leaving some of the west-central high Plains crop areas dry or mostly dry
- U.S. harvest weather is expected to deteriorate as we move through the week next week and into the final days of October and early November due to rain and snow
- U.S. Delta and southeastern states will be dry through Thursday of next week and then some rain will fall in the Delta Oct. 27-29 and eventually it will reach the southeastern states near the end of this month.

- Another hot and dry day occurred in center west Brazil, Bolivia and central and northern Paraguay Wednesday and more of the same was expected through Monday; some cooling is expected next week as a boost in scattered showers and thunderstorms occur
- Argentina’s rain potentials are still good for the coming week to ten days with many areas getting much needed rain for a temporary increase in soil moisture
- Southern Brazil’s wet bias will remain in place for the next couple of weeks, although excessive rainfall should be absent for a while
- Much of Australia will be dry or mostly dry during the next ten days; including the very driest areas of Western Australia where the need for moisture is high for reproducing winter crops
- Andhra Pradesh and immediate neighboring areas in southern India are still too dry with little change likely
- China weather is expected to be well mixed in most grain and oilseed production areas; wheat planting will advance well
- Southern China will experience above normal rainfall from Tropical Storm Sanba as it meanders around in the Gulf of Tonkin the remainder of this week
- Heat and dryness continue a serious threat to agriculture in southern Indonesia with extreme high temperatures again Wednesday of 100 to 102 Fahrenheit in western Java
- Western Europe is still expected to become quite wet in the next ten days; flooding may eventually develop in parts of France, northwestern Spain, northern Italy and northern Portugal
- Middle and lower parts of the Danube River Basin will be dry for another week with some relief possible in middle parts of the basin in the Oct. 26-Nov. 1 period while the lower basin stays dry

- Argentina’s rain potentials are still good for western, central and northern areas periodically over the next ten days; Buenos Aires may be driest for a while
- Southern Brazil’s wet bias will remain in place for the next couple of weeks, although excessive rainfall should be absent for a while
- Much of Australia will be dry or mostly dry during the next ten days; including the very driest areas of Western Australia where the need for moisture is high for reproducing winter crops
- Recent rain in northern India was good for winter crop planting, although more would be welcome

- Excessive heat occurred in northern Argentina, Paraguay and a few neighboring areas in Brazil Monday with extreme highs of 100 to 111 Fahrenheit
- Argentina rain potentials still look better for Saturday through Monday and again Oct. 25-26 with sufficient rain expected to improve topsoil moisture in many areas
- Center west Brazil will continue drying out over the next week with temperatures very warm to hot stressing early planted crops
- Southern Brazil will get more excessive rain through the end of this week
- Western Australia will remain dry for the next ten days
- Queensland and northern New South Wales unirrigated summer crop planting will remain on hold due to dryness for an indefinite period of time
- Ukraine and northern parts of Russia’s Southern Region will get significant moisture in the coming ten days easing long term dryness
- Cooling in western parts of the CIS and eastern Europe may slow winter crop development, but new growth and establishment will continue
- Dryness will prevail in the middle and lower Danube River Basin through the next ten days
- Morocco will get some needed rain in the next ten days
- Western Europe is expecting abundant to excessive rainfall late this week through much of next week stalling fieldwork, but raising soil moisture and water supply
- Torrential flooding continues in central coastal areas of Vietnam with another 8.00 inches of rain occurring Monday bring 4-day totals to 41.30 inches at Da Nang with more rain coming
- A tropical cyclone forming off the west coast of Mexico will bring rain to central and northeastern Mexico next week as well as in a part of the U.S. southern Plains and southeastern hard red winter wheat areas
- Cooling may bring rain and snow to the northern U.S. Plains and eastern Canada’s Prairies next week
