WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 12, 2023
- Not much change again overnight
- Dryness is still a worry in Spain, Portugal, North Africa and U.S. west-central and southwestern Plains and portions of Canada’s Prairies
- Some snow and rain will fall in the southeastern Canada Prairies, but the heart of the region from southern Alberta to north-central Saskatchewan will be drier biased for an extended period of time
- Snow and rain in the southeast half of Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba will be sufficient to bolster soil moisture for future planting, although concern remains over the potential for flooding in the Red River Basin
- Aggressive snowmelt is continuing in the upper U.S. Midwest and northeastern Plains as well as southeastern Canada’s Prairies where flooding is evolving
- Rain and some wet snow will impact these areas Friday into Saturday morning to aggravate the flood situation
- Lighter than usual precipitation will continue over the next ten days in the lower U.S. Midwest where aggressive spring planting is expected especially after a few days of warm and drier biased weather
- Argentina will receive limited precipitation for a while favoring summer crop maturation and harvesting
- Brazil rainfall will be sufficient to raise topsoil moisture for long term Safrinha corn and cotton use
- Sugarcane and coffee areas in portions of center south Brazil may need some drier weather later this month
- Weather in most of Europe (outside of the southwest), the CIS, China, India, Australia and South Africa is mostly favorable right now with little change likely
- Tropical Cyclone 18S (Ilsa) will move into northwestern Australia Thursday and a disturbance near the Philippines will bring some rain to Luzon Island and possibly a part of Samar Island

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 11, 2023
- Status quo conditions for much of the world today
- Dryness is still a worry in Spain, Portugal, North Africa and U.S. west-central and southwestern Plains and portions of Canada’s Prairies
- Some snow and rain will fall in the northwestern and southeastern Canada Prairies, but the heart of the region is not likely to see much dryness relief
- Aggressive snowmelt is under way in the upper U.S. Midwest and northeastern Plains as well as southeastern Canada’s Prairies where flooding is expected to evolve over the next few days
- Rain and some wet snow will impact these areas Thursday into Saturday morning to aggravate the flood situation
- Lighter than usual precipitation will continue over the next ten days in the lower U.S. Midwest where aggressive spring planting is expected especially after a few days of drying evolves
- Argentina will receive limited precipitation for a while favoring summer crop maturation and harvesting

- Rain will continue in the remainder of Europe, including Belarus, Ukraine and Russia’s Southern Region over the next ten days
- Canada’s Prairies will be mostly dry except near the front range of mountains in Alberta and across northern parts of that province during mid-week this week
- U.S. west-central and southwestern Plains are still advertised to be dry over the next ten days
- California and the southwestern desert region will be dry biased for the next ten days
- Abundant rain in the U.S. southeastern states and lower Delta during the weekend delayed fieldwork
- The heart of the U.S. Midwest will receive below normal precipitation over the next ten days
- Very warm U.S. temperatures are expected this week with some cooling possible next week in the east half of the nation
- Watch for frost and some freezes next week, although confidence in the timing and intensity of the cold is still very low
- Aggressive snowmelt is expected this week in the Red River Basin of the North
- Argentina weather will remain drier biased in some central and southern crop areas this week
- Brazil will be dry in the south through mid-week and then may see a boost in precipitation late this week and especially next week
- Center south Brazil will get timely rainfall over the next couple of weeks with the greatest rain next week
- China weather remains quite favorable along with that of India and Australia for this time of year
- South Africa weather is typical for early April as well

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 6, 2023
- Dryness will continue in North Africa, Spain and Portugal during the next ten days with some expansion into southern France
- The region will also be warmer than usual
- Drying is also expected in the U.S. Midwest where temperatures will rise above normal firming the soil and improving spring planting prospects in the lower Midwest as well as the U.S. Delta
- Flooding will begin in north-central U.S. from eastern North Dakota and northeastern South Dakota to upper Michigan and parts of Wisconsin in this coming week as snowmelt occurs more aggressively in response to warmer temperatures
- U.S Delta and southeastern states will be too wet for a while through the weekend and into early next week before welcome drying and warming occurs later next week
- Western portions of the U.S. hard red winter wheat region will stay drier than usual through mid-month
- Argentina will experience net drying in this coming week
- Brazil’s center south crop areas will get some welcome rain over the next week to ten days boosting topsoil moisture for Safrinha crop use after the monsoon withdraws later this month
- China’s winter and spring crop area in the Yellow River Basin, North China Plain and areas to the south should have favorable conditions for planting over the next two weeks, although there will be some additional rainfall periodically
- Western Russia will benefit from drier weather over the next week to ten days after becoming quite wet recently from rain, snow and melting snow
- Ukraine, Belarus and Russia’s Southern Region will experience periods of rain that will saturate the soil and delay spring planting, but the moisture will be very good for future crop development
- India, Australia, South Africa, Central Africa and Southeast Asia precipitation is expected to continue supportive of crop needs in each of those areas

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 5, 2023
- U.S. central and southern hard red winter wheat areas experienced strong wind speeds, extremely low humidity and very warm temperatures Tuesday further stressing all crops, especially the unirrigated crop
- Model forecast changes for U.S. hard red winter wheat areas are showing up a little more consistently today with both the operational GFS and ECMWF ensemble suggesting a wetter second week for central and eastern parts of hard red winter wheat country
- As noted in our long range outlook released last week this potential change has a good chance of verifying, although the high Plains region will not likely be included
- Impressive snowfall occurred Tuesday from South Dakota to southeastern Manitoba, Canada and Minnesota with totals of 4 to 11 inches common and local amounts to 14 inches at Pierre, South Dakota
- The snow will linger in northern parts of eastern North Dakota and northern Minnesota today as well as in southeastern Manitoba and southwestern Ontario, Canada
- U.S. Midwest crop areas outside of the far northwest will experience sufficient warm and dry weather this weekend and especially next week to firm the topsoil and allow some farming activity to begin
- The Delta crop areas will also see some improved opportunity for planting
- The odds are great that rain will develop in the Plains and western two-thirds of the Midwest late in the second week and into the third weeks of the forecast
- West Texas will continue dry biased for another week with “some” showers possible in the second and third week outlooks, but a general soaking is not likely
- California will start trending a little wetter again near mid-month
- North Africa will be dry biased in the next ten days
- Recent rain in northeastern Algeria and northern Tunisia helped east dryness, but more is needed in all of North Africa
- Spain will continue to be drier than usual for the next ten days
- India weather will be more typically dry in its winter crop region in the next two weeks than seen in recent weeks
- More rain fell in China’s lower Yellow River Basin and North China Plain Tuesday finishing out a three day rain event that bolstered soil moisture significantly throughout the key wheat production region and setting the stage for aggressive spring planting
- China’s rapeseed area will stay plenty wet for a while
- No changes in Australia or South Africa overnight and most of South America weather was unchanged as well

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 4, 2023
- Snow and blowing snow will impact today and Wednesday across the U.S. Northern Plains and a part of the upper Midwest with rain and some snow possible in the remainder of the upper Midwest
- A severe weather outbreak is expected tonight and Wednesday across portions of the U.S. Midwest and Delta
- Canada’s Prairies will continue drier biased with temperatures likely to be colder than usual today and then much warmer this weekend and especially next week
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas and most of West Texas cotton areas will continue dry biased for the next ten days
- U.S. Delta and Tennessee River Basin as well as parts of the Carolinas and Georgia will receive heavy rain and experience local flooding possibly later this week followed by drier weather this weekend
- Southwestern Argentina will be dry biased during the coming week while rain falls in the central and north
- Brazil’s drier areas in center south production areas will get rain late this weekend into next week to improve Safrinha crops
- Western Russia will receive limited precipitation for a while as Ukraine, Belarus and Russia’s Southern Region are wettest
- Significant rain continued to move across China’s Yellow River Basin Monday and it will move farther east today
- No changes in Australia, South Africa or southeast Asia were noted overnight and India is still looking at drier and warm weather

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 3, 2023
- U.S. Red River Basin of the North flood potential are rising and the weekend snow event has contributed potential runoff to the situation
- New snowfall of 4 to 12 inches and local totals to 18 inches occurred from central South Dakota to west-central Minnesota
- A new storm during mid-week this week will produce 6 to 20 inches of snow and a blizzard across the Dakotas to southern Manitoba Canada and northern Minnesota
- Another 0.50 to 1.75 inches of moisture will be added to the snowpack waiting to be meted
- Temperatures in the north-central United States may rise above normal next week accelerating the snow melt that will begin late this week and during the weekend
- U.S. Delta and Tennessee River Basin will be too wet this week and may experience flooding as another 2.00 to 6.00 inches of rain falls from eastern Texas to the southern Tennessee River Basin
- Another severe weather outbreak is expected Tuesday into Wednesday in the U.S. Midwest and Delta resulting in damaging wind, tornadoes and hail
- Similar conditions occurred Friday into Saturday morning
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas will continue dry biased this week with temperatures warming this weekend into next week to enhance crop stress in dryland areas
- India’s wet biased weather is ending and better winter crop conditions should result this week and next week
- China’s North China Plain and Yellow River Basin began receiving rain Sunday and it will spread east today resulting in 0.50 to 1.50 inches of moisture, although more than 2.00 inches already occurred in the upper Yellow River Basin and central Inner Mongolia.
- North Africa will get a few showers in northeastern Algeria and Tunisia today after getting rain Sunday and then the region will dry down again
- Dryness has been threatening North Africa durum wheat and barley production this year
- Not much change was suggested for South America this week relative to that of Friday
- Brazil’s center south crop areas will trend wetter later this week into next week
- Southern Argentina, Uruguay and southern Rio Grande do Sul will be dry biased this in this first week to 8 or 9 days of the outlook
- Eastern Australia weather will be drier biased this week while some welcome showers occur in the far southern part of the nation.

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MARCH 31, 2023
- Weather pattern changes may begin to evolve in North America during the second week of April and that is when warming in the north-central states will begin to melt the impressive snowpack
- Two storm systems are expected in the north-central United States between now and Thursday of next week producing 1.00 to 3.00 inches of moisture and some very impressive snowfall adding to the flood potential in the Red River Basin and upper Mississippi River Basin
- U.S. southwestern Plains are advertised wetter again for the second weekend of the outlook, but this feature seems overdone by the GFS model run and some caution is advised
- The heart of the U.S. hard red winter wheat region does not get much moisture in the next ten days
- Rain will fall abundantly in the Delta, Tennessee River Basin and portions of the lower eastern Midwest for the next ten days keeping fieldwork to a minimum
- Flooding in the upper U.S. Midwest and northeastern Plains will begin in the second and third weeks of April
- California’s stormy weather pattern is winding down
- Canada’s Prairies will continue to see limited precipitation for a while
- Central Brazil rainfall will resume in the second week of the forecast and recent drying has been good for soybean harvesting
- Southern Argentina rainfall will be lightest for the next ten days while rain falls farther to the north benefiting late season crops, but interfering with fieldwork at times too
- China’s Yellow River Basin and North China Plain will get rain late this weekend into early next week improving early season planting moisture and wheat development conditions
- China’s Yangtze River Basin will be dry into the weekend and then get rain late this weekend and next week
- Far northern India will get periods of rain into early next week threatening winter wheat quality
- Southeastern and far eastern India will receive rain during the next ten days favoring winter rice and sugarcane
- Northeastern Algeria and Tunisia will get rain late this weekend into early next week
- Morocco and northwestern Algeria may get dryness easing rain after April 4, although it will be sporadic and light
