WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 24, 2023
- Some frost and freeze damage may have occurred in Nebraska, northern Kansas and northeastern Colorado Sunday morning when temperatures fell to the upper teens and lower 20s Fahrenheit
- The impact of the cold is not known, but temperatures were colder than expected into central Kansas and perhaps cold enough to induce damage to some of the crop’s reproductive potential
- Rain is expected in the central two-thirds of hard red winter wheat country by Thursday of this week
- The moisture will be welcome and help improve topsoil moisture for future crop development
- Limited rainfall is expected in the far southwest of hard red winter wheat areas and in West Texas cotton areas as well as in Nebraska and north-central Kansas
- Other areas in Texas, the U.S. Delta and southeastern states will benefit from alternating periods of rain and sun this week and next week
- Eastern Canada’s Prairies and the northeastern U.S. Plains and upper Midwest will see a few more periods of rain, drizzle and light snowfall this week while a part of the southwestern Prairies remains drier than usual
- Argentina and Brazil weather for the next two weeks has changed little since Friday with a good balance or rain and sunshine likely
- Southwestern Spain, Portugal and North Africa will remain drier than usual
- Russia’s Ural Mountains region and a part of the eastern New Lands will experience dry and warm weather over the next ten days
- China received significant rain during the weekend
- India may trend a little too wet in various portions of the nation during the next two weeks as rainfall becomes more widespread and enhanced
- Southern Australia will get some showers, but more rain will be needed to raise soil moisture for good wheat, barley and canola emergence and establishment
- Southeast Asia rainfall will be increasing this week.
- Thailand sugarcane areas received some welcome rain during the weekend, but mostly in easternmost locations
- Cotton areas from southern Mali to Burkina Faso are too dry

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 21, 2023
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas will have three opportunities for rain during the next ten days
- Nearly all areas will get rain, though many areas will have need for follow up rain especially in the southwest
- West Texas rain potentials have improved for the coming week to ten days and the moisture that falls will improve planting conditions for cotton, sorghum and corn – most of which begins next month
- U.S. Delta and southeastern states will be wet or become that way in the next seven days slowing fieldwork
- U.S. Midwest temperatures will be quite cool at times this weekend and next week with some periodic rainfall as well resulting in a slow planting pace, but the rain volume will be lighter than usual.
- This week’s rain and snowstorm in Canada’s eastern Prairies, the upper U.S. Midwest and Red River Basin will end today and early Saturday with the next large precipitation event expected late next week and into the following weekend
- Next week’s storm system may be the last in this series with drier and warmer weather to follow
- Southwestern Canada’s Prairies will continue drier than usual in the next ten days, but some precipitation is possible
- South America weather appears to be mostly good, especially if rain falls in Mato Grosso as advertised
- Southwestern Europe and North Africa will remain drier than usual
- Some drying in Kazakhstan and a few eastern Russia spring wheat areas will be closely monitored, although the region is in great shape for spring planting
- China’s southern rapeseed and southeastern rice areas will continue quite wet over the next two weeks
- Southern Australia is advertised to receive some timely rainfall over the next week as a frontal system moves from west to east; the moisture will be good for future wheat, barley and canola planting
- South Africa will continue dry biased
- India will remain cooler biased with limited rain in this first week of the outlook; showers may increase in the last days of April and continue in early May to possibly disrupt harvesting
- Mali to Burkina Faso to remain drier biased for another five to six days and then some showers are possible
- Southeast Asia rainfall will be increasing in Indonesia and Malaysia and possibly in a part of the mainland production areas
- Dryness in eastern Mexico continues to be eased by periodic rainfall

- Snowstorm in Canada’s eastern Prairies will wind down today, but some of the snow is expected in northern and eastern North Dakota and northern Minnesota
- New storm in the upper U.S. Midwest tonight and Friday will induce more heavy rain, significant runoff and additional flooding
- South America weather appears to be mostly good, especially if rain falls in Mato Grosso as advertised

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 19, 2023
- West-central and southwestern U.S. hard red winter wheat areas are still not advertised to receive a significant amount of rain over the next two weeks, although some showers are advertised
- Central and eastern portions of wheat country should see a boost in rainfall that will be good for crops beginning next week
- Cold weather in the U.S. northern and central Plains and Midwest this weekend and Monday is not likely to hurt winter wheat in a permanent manner, but concern is rising over some early planted corn and a few fields of soybeans that have emerged
- A second bout of cold is advertised to impact the U.S. Midwest during the last days of April and that may not go over very well for early planted corn and soybeans, although there is plenty of time for moderation in the temperature outlook
- Snowstorm in eastern Canada’s Prairies today through Thursday will produce 0.50 to 1.50 inches of moisture and local totals to 2.00 inches with 6-15 inches of snow and local totals of 15-20 inches – some weakening of the storm is expected
- Southwestern Canada’s Prairies will remain drier biased through the end of this month, although some light precipitation is expected briefly
- U.S. Red River Basin of the North flooding may not be as bad as feared if precipitation will be limited during the next few weeks
- Cold temperatures in the coming ten days will help slow the remaining snow melt
- Some snow and rain will impact the region briefly Thursday and Friday
- Upper Mississippi River Basin flooding will be aggravated by rain and snow over the next few days
- Planting delays are expected near the Mississippi River due to flooding
- India’s weather may trend cooler and a little wetter in the second week of the outlook which might disrupt its harvest and raise some concern over winter crop quality; first week temperatures will also be cooler than usual, but precipitation will be limited
- Mato Grosso, Brazil’s Safrinha corn areas are drying down a little early and will need to be closely monitored; however, most of the latest planted Safrinha corn was in Parana, Mato Grosso do Sul and Sao Paulo where the moisture profile is still quite abundant
- Seasonal rains have ended in much of Brazil, although rain in the interior south will linger for a little longer
- Kazakhstan and Russia’s spring wheat areas will experience some net drying next week and into the last days of this month, but the environment will be great for planting – rain will be important in May to prevent the region from getting too dry
- West Texas rain prospects are poor during the next ten days, although some showers are likely
- U.S. Delta will get rain as cold air arrives late this week and then will get much more rain next week as warming evolves
- Western Australia will dry down over the next ten days; some planting of wheat, barley and canola has begun

- Snowstorm in eastern Canada’s Prairies Tuesday through Thursday of this week will produce 0.50 to 1.50 inches of moisture and local totals to 2.00 inches with 6-15 inches of snow and local totals of 15-20 inches – some weakening of the storm is expected
- Southwestern Canada’s Prairies will remain drier biased through the end of this month
- Freezes are still expected in hard red winter wheat areas this coming weekend occurring as far south as Oklahoma
- Freezes will also occur in the Midwest, northern Delta and as far south as Kentucky with frost in Tennessee late in this coming weekend
- West-central and southwestern U.S. Plains may get some showers as colder air arrives late this week and there “may” be some potential for showers again as warmer air returns next week
- This will include both hard red winter wheat areas and corn sorghum and cotton
- Moisture totals are not advertised to be very great today, but the orientation of the weekend cold and associated high pressure system will dictate the rain potential
- Central parts of the Plains should see some beneficial rain when warming returns next week
- U.S. Red River Basin of the North flooding may not be as bad as feared if precipitation will be limited during the next few weeks
- Cold temperatures in the coming ten days will help slow the remaining snow melt
- Canada’s Red River Basin and the Assiniboia River Basin flood potentials may worsen with the onset of this week’s significant snowstorm and the snow water equivalency that will run off into the Red River in Manitoba eventually
- No change in dryness was suggested for Spain, Portugal or North Africa during the next ten days, despite a few showers expected
- Favorable crop weather is likely in most areas of the world; including China, India, Australia, South Africa, Europe (away from the southwest) and Ukraine, Belarus and Russia’s Southern Region
- Argentina will be drier biased in the coming week favoring summer crop harvesting; some showers will occur in days 7-11
- Brazil’s Safrinha corn south of Mato Grosso will get rain through mid-week this week while other areas are drying down
- Most of the late week this week and next week will be drier biased throughout Brazil
- Mali and Burkina Faso cotton areas will remain dry
- West Texas rain prospects are poor during the next ten days

- This will include both hard red winter wheat areas and corn sorghum and cotton
- Frost and freezes will impact many areas in the central U.S. Plains Midwest and possibly in the northern Delta this coming weekend and early next week what may induce some crop damage, although the details of the cold are not fully understood yet
- Southwestern Canada’s Prairies will continue to miss the needed moisture the region needs
- More precipitation is expected in eastern Canada’s Prairies later this week and into the weekend with much of it occurring as snow
- U.S. Red River Basin of the North flooding may not be as bad as feared if precipitation will be limited during the next few weeks
- Cold temperatures in the coming ten days will help slow the remaining snow melt
- No change in dryness was suggested for Spain, Portugal or North Africa during the weekend or during the next ten days

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 14, 2023
- Many computer forecast models today are advertising colder air in the central parts of North America for April 21-23
- Southwestern U.S. Plains are still dry biased for the next ten days
- Red River Basin of the North in the U.S. and Canada will not get as much precipitation this weekend as previously advertised
- Flooding in the Red River Basin of the North will begin this weekend and last into early May
- U.S. lower eastern Midwest is wetter for late next week along with the Delta and southeastern states because of the advertised cold surge
- Snow and rain fell Thursday and early today in southern and east-central Saskatchewan, but it will dissipate as it moves into Manitoba
- Not much other precipitation is expected in Canada’s Prairies through the next five days, but some snow and rain may evolve in the east late next week ahead of much colder air
- Argentina is dry biased for the next ten days
- Interior southern Brazil will be wet over the next ten days
- Northeastern Brazil was advertised drier today possibly hinting at the withdrawing monsoon
- Southwestern Europe and North Africa are still advertised dry and warm over the next ten days
- Rain this weekend from Ukraine to Kazakhstan will be welcome and another event may occur in Ukraine and Russia’s Volga River Basin late next week
- China’s rapeseed area is still expected to turn wet next week and wheat areas in the Yellow River Basin and North China Plain is advertised to receive rain again in about ten days
- No changes were noted in India, Australia, South Africa or West-central Africa today relative to Thursday
- Indonesia and Malaysia weather will continue drying down because of negative phase of Madden Julian Oscillation

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 13, 2023
- Fort Lauderdale, Fl. reported 25.60 inches of rain Wednesday surpassing its previous one day record of 14.59 inches set April 25, 1979 (22.60 inches in 7 hours)
- Intense tropical cyclone Ilsa was moving into northwestern Australia today producing maximum sustained wind speeds of 150 mph offshore earlier today and will come inland with speeds near 143 mph. The storm was 74 miles north northeast of Port Hedland, Western Australia at 1030 GMT today and its center was expected to pass 81 miles to the east of the port city around 1400 GMT today. Hurricane force wind speeds were occurring out 40-45 miles from center of the storm. The storm is a Category 4 hurricane equivalent storm based on the Saffir Simpson Scale
- European forecast model produces a deep upper level low pressure center in the center of the United States April 20-22 that could bring some notable cooling to the central and eastern parts of nation and significant rain to the upper Midwest, but this feature seems overdone and is not matched by the Ensemble or by any of the recent GFS model runs
- 00z GFS model run did not have this feature, but the latest 06z GFS model is much colder in the eastern half of the nation for April
- U.S. southeastern states will experience another wave of significant rain later today and Friday with some follow up rain during the weekend keeping the ground quite wet
- U.S. west-central and southwestern Plains will remain drier biased for the next ten days
- U.S. wheat areas in Nebraska and Kansas may get rain in the second week of the forecast – lightest in the west
- Rain and wet snow in U.S. Red River Basin of the North Friday and Saturday will aggravate flooding resulting from melting snow
- Snow and rain today and Friday in southern Saskatchewan, Canada will improve topsoil moisture in one of the Prairies driest areas, but no relief from dryness is likely in southern or east-central Alberta for much of the next ten days
- Mato Grosso, Brazil rainfall with be periodic, although light in the next ten days while Safrinha crop areas to the south in Mato Grosso do Sul, Parana and Sao Paulo are plenty wet
- China’s Yangtze River Basin and areas southward to the coastal provinces will experience waves of heavy rain next week that may lead to some flooding; this would impact rice and southern rapeseed areas as well as a few other crops like sugarcane, citrus and minor corn
- Spain and North Africa dryness will continue over the next ten days
