WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 5, 2023
- Upper U.S. Midwest and northeastern Plains weather this weekend will include scattered showers that will interfere with the region’s recent drying trend and will limit fieldwork for some areas
- Another storm will follow during mid-week next week adding more moisture to the region and perpetuating some field working delay
- All U.S. Midwest and Great Plains crop areas will get moisture at one time or another during the next two weeks and the overall environment will be good for future spring and summer crop planting and development
- Some of the rain is overdone with the lower eastern Midwest expecting the best conditions
- Warm temperatures in the southern half of the Plains and from the Ohio River Valley to the Gulf of Mexico Coast will keep evaporation rates high enough between rain events to minimize disruptions to farming activity
- U.S. West-central and southwestern Plains will see the lightest precipitation in the Plains for a while
- The best chance for rain in the west-central and southwestern Plains should be in the middle to latter part of next week
- West Texas rain potentials will begin to improve again during mid-week next week and the risk of showers and thunderstorms may be highest in the second half of next week and into the following weekend
- Cordoba through Entre Rios, Argentina to Uruguay will be wettest today and Saturday with some moderate to heavy rain possible
- Other areas in Argentina are unlikely to get much significant rain over the next ten days
- Center south and center west Brazil will experience seasonal drying through the next two weeks
- Rio Grande do Sul into southern Paraguay will be wet through Monday with frequent waves of rain saturating the soil
- Spain, Portugal and North Africa will continue dry biased through the coming week, although there is still some potential for rain in northeastern Algeria and northern Tunisia late next week and into the following weekend
- Some relief from recent drying is expected next week in northern Kazakhstan and neighboring areas of Russia’s southeastern New Lands; A new ridge of high pressure is likely after that
- India’s weather will be more normal over the next ten days
- Australia’s rainfall over the next ten days will be greatest in coastal areas
- South Africa will be trending wetter in the east
- Indonesia and Malaysia will remain sufficiently wet biased
- Tropical cyclone will form in eastern Bay of Bengal next week and move toward rice and sugarcane areas of Myanmar

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 4, 2023
- Additional rain fell in portions of West Texas, the U.S. Texas Panhandle and western and southern Oklahoma Wednesday and early today s
- Other showers and thunderstorms will occur periodically over the next two weeks with mostly light rain resulting
- Less rain was advertised for Western Australia in the next ten days in today’s forecast model runs than advertised earlier this week
- India’s weather is drier over the next two weeks
- A tropical cyclone is still advertised to threaten Myanmar next week
- Rain has been reduced from northeastern Algeria and northern Tunisia for next week
- Central Europe rainfall next week may be heavy impacting Italy, the western Balkan Countries and areas north into southern Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and western Hungary
- Northeastern Europe and the western CIS will experience frost and freezes Friday into Monday
- Eastern South Africa is a little wetter in today’s outlook for next week
- Rain will fall from northeastern Cordoba to Entre Rios, Argentina and Uruguay later today into Friday with 0.50 to 1.50 inches resulting
- GFS model does suggest a cold front from Argentina may reach into center west and center south Brazil around mid-month
- U.S. upper Midwest and northeastern Plains are still advertised to be wet Friday night into Monday and again during the middle to latter part of next week restricting drying time and adding more delay to spring and summer crop planting
- Canada’s Southwestern Prairies drought region is not likely to get drought busting rain, but some showers are possible over the weekend and again later next week

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 3, 2023
- Returning wet weather is expected in the eastern Dakotas, Minnesota and Manitoba, Canada beginning this weekend and lasting through much of next week resulting in a setback to this week’s drying trend
- U.S. hard red winter wheat rainfall in Nebraska and parts of Kansas continues overdone in today’s forecast model runs, although the ridiculous amount of rain advertised by the GFS model Tuesday for the coming ten days was greatly reduced overnight which was a necessary change
- West-central and southwestern parts of the Plains will continue to receive sporadic rainfall of lighter than usual intensity
- A favorable mix of weather is expected in the U.S. Midwest, Delta and southeastern states over the next two weeks
- West Texas cotton areas received a few showers overnight, but resulting rainfall was rarely more than 0.30 inch and additional showers are possible periodically during the next two weeks – no drought busting rainfall is expected
- Canada’s Prairies will experience some increase in shower activity this weekend and next week, but big soakings of rain are unlikely
- Argentina will continue dry biased for much of the next ten days, but the situation will be good for summer crop maturation and harvesting; rain will soon be needed for wheat planting, though
- Brazil weather will remain relatively normal for this time of year with no risk of damaging cold and net drying for many center west and center south crop areas
- Southwestern Europe and northern Africa will continue drier than usual for another week, but there will be “some” potential for rain next week in northeastern Algeria and northern Tunisia
- Other areas in Europe and the western CIS will see a mix of rain and sunshine; although, another bout of cold air is expected from Scandinavia into Ukraine, Belarus and northwestern Russia late this week into early next week
- India will continue cooler than usual with a few more showers and thunderstorms than usual during the next ten days
- Returning cool air to Xinjiang Jiang will set back a much needed warming trend for a while this weekend and next week
- Russia’s southern eastern New Lands region and northern Kazakhstan will receive some rain next week, but net drying is expected until then
- China’s rapeseed country needs drier weather to promote maturation and harvesting
- Western Australia will receive some badly needed rain this weekend and again next week

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 1, 2023
- Eastern U.S. Midwest precipitation is expected to be lighter than usual for a while
- Rain is expected to evolve in the U.S. southern Plains especially this weekend and next week that will raise soil moisture for cotton, sorghum and corn east of the High Plains
- West Texas rainfall is still expected to be sporadic and light over the next couple of weeks
- Greater rainfall is expected again this weekend into early next week across the eastern Dakotas and Minnesota to Manitoba, Canada that will maintain wet field conditions
- Warming in Canada’s Prairies and the northern U.S. will be good for a few days of net drying, but rain will fall soon thereafter slowing fieldwork
- Drought relief is still not very likely in Alberta of western Saskatchewan, Canada
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas will continue to receive sporadic rainfall for the next ten days, although every drop of rain will be welcome
- Spain, Portugal and northwestern Africa are still expected to be dry or mostly dry in the coming week
- Kazakhstan and southern parts of Russia’s eastern New Lands will remain dry for another week with temperatures near to above normal
- Western Australia rain potentials are improving for this weekend and next week and that should lead to better planting and emergence conditions for wheat, barley and canola
- India will remain wetter biased into the weekend, although daily rainfall should not be as disruptive to farming activity as it was during the weekend; some concern over unharvested winter crop conditions will prevail
- Brazil’s center south and center west crop areas will continue to dry down seasonably through the next couple of weeks, although Safrinha crops will remain in good condition
- Argentina rainfall will continue limited over the next ten days
- Positive Indian Ocean Dipole is expected to evolve over the next few weeks

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 1, 2023
- Unusually great amounts of rain fell in India during the weekend stalling fieldwork and raising concern for unharvested winter crops
- Unsettled weather will continue through Wednesday causing more delay and more concern over crop conditions
- Portions of China’s eastern North China Plain and the northeastern provinces received rain during the weekend improving spring planting moisture and improving a few winter crops in Hebei; Shandong missed the rain once again and is too dry in some areas
- A few more showers and thunderstorms are expected in West Texas during the next ten days, although big soakings of rain may elude the region for a while longer
- S. Midwest will experience a good mix of rain and sunshine, although there will be some disruption to farming activity
- S. Plains weather will be favorably mixed for spring planting and emergence and some winter crops will benefit from the moisture as well
- S. Midwest weather will be cool, showery and blustery today and for a little while Tuesday resulting in poor field working conditions, but mid- to late-week weather will improve before rain resumes late this week and into the weekend
- Canada’s Prairies will be unusually warm and drier than usual this workweek allowing spring fieldwork to advance in many areas; some rain will impact southeastern Manitoba during the weekend and Alberta could be impacted with some rain by early next week
- Brazil’s key Safrinha corn and cotton producing areas will experience limited rainfall for the next ten days and seasonable temperatures
- Eastern Argentina will trend wetter later this week and the moisture will spread to the south this weekend and early next week
- Heavy rain is possible in northeastern Argentina, Paraguay and Rio Grande de Sul Friday into Monday of next week
- Frost and freezes occurred late last week in northeastern Europe causing damage to various fruit bearing bushes and trees, but not to wheat or rapeseed; additional cold weather is expected over coming week to ten days with some of that getting into northwestern Russia as well
- Spain, Portugal and North Africa will continue warm and mostly dry for another ten days
- Dry and warm weather will continue this week in Kazakhstan and southern parts of Russia’s eastern New Lands; dryness continues into next week with more seasonable temperatures likely
- Southeast Asia will continue receive periodic rain supporting most crops and fieldwork
- Australia rainfall will be confined to the far south this week; Western Australia may get some needed rain next week

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 28, 2023
- Unusual warmth will occur in the western North America during the next week to ten days
- Warming will be slow to occur in the U.S. Midwest during the coming week. cool conditions and some showers in the north will be a concern over soil temperatures, but precipitation will slowly become lighter overtime and farmers will likely plant more aggressively as soon as it becomes obvious that warming is coming
- Additional showers will fall in U.S. hard red winter wheat areas today into Saturday morning with a couple of frontal systems expected to bring more showers next week
- West Texas cotton areas will continue to struggle with dryness over the next ten days, despite a few showers
- California will start to trend wetter again next week and the wet weather will linger into the following week
- Significant warming will induce some notable snowmelt for a while in this coming week
- Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri and Illinois rainfall will be restricted over the next ten days
- A little more shower activity is advertised for parts of Spain late next week into the following weekend, but relief from dryness will be restricted in the south
- North Africa will get some shower activity, but not enough to seriously change soil or crop conditions – many areas are still too dry
- Kazakhstan and southern and some eastern portions of Russia’s eastern New Lands will continue to dry out and heat up during the next ten days
- Western Russia (west of the Ural Mountains) and eastern Ukraine as well as Russia’s Southern Region will trend wetter over the next ten days
- Unusually active weather is expected in India over the next ten days raising harvest concerns for some winter crops
- Southeastern China will trend much wetter again for a while next week
- North China soil moisture will be favorable except in Liaoning, eastern Shandong and some areas north into interior eastern Inner Mongolia
- Eastern Australia will get some rain today and early Saturday; Western Australia will be dry for at least another week
- Indonesia and Malaysia will continue plenty wet for the next ten days

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 27, 2023
- Southern portions of Russia’s eastern New Lands and northern Kazakhstan are still advertised dry and warm biased over the next ten days and perhaps a little longer
- Dryness remains in Spain and North Africa
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas will see some follow up rain later today and Friday that will further improve crop and field conditions for better spring planting and for some additional improvement to wheat conditions
- Dry and warm biased weather in western Canada will promote spring fieldwork
- Eastern Canada’s Prairies and the eastern part of North Dakota and Minnesota will experience cool conditions for another week and the remaining snow will melt; fieldwork will be slow to begin in many areas
- Lower and west-central U.S. Midwest crop areas will receive lighter than usual precipitation over the next two weeks with cool weather in the first week and a return to more normal temperatures in the second week
- Argentina has a little more rain potential for the second week of the outlook today, but net drying will continue in this first week
- Brazil’s center west and center south crop areas will continue to receive restricted precipitation which is normal for this time of year
- Southern Brazil will experience some periodic rainfall that will maintain a good outlook for late season crops
- New South Wales and a part of Queensland will receive some rain briefly Friday into Saturday to benefit future winter crop planting, but follow up rain will be needed
- Watch Western Australia where the need for rain is expected to rise for a while
- Wetter weather is expected in the western CIS while Europe sees routinely occurring rainfall outside of the Iberian Peninsula where it should be dry for a while

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 26, 2023
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas began receiving rain overnight and will continue to see waves of it through Friday
- Sufficient amounts will occur to induce great improvements in crop and field conditions
- U.S. Midwest, Great Plains, Delta and southeastern states will be cooler than usual through the first few days in May and the a more normal temperature regime is expected
- Eastern Canada’s Prairies will also be cooler than usual into next week before warming begins
- Western Canada’s Prairies will experience warmer temperatures and some fieldwork will begin
- West Texas cotton areas will only get a limited amount of rain during the next ten days, although a few showers and thunderstorms will be possible at times
- The Rolling Plains of Texas, southwestern Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle will all receive needed rain
- A favorable mix of weather is expected in the Delta and southeastern states over the next ten days with a wetter and cooler bias expected in the first half of that period
- California is poised for greater precipitation once again and that along with melting snow will lead to some rising flood potentials
- Southwestern Europe and northwestern Africa will continue drier and warmer than usual for another ten days
- Northern Kazakhstan and southern parts of Russia’s eastern New Lands will be drier and warmer than usual for the next ten days
- India will experience some scattered showers and thunderstorms – some of which may be locally heavy in the interior southeast
- China will continue to experience mostly good weather, although rain is needed in a part of the northeast and drier weather is needed south of the Yangtze River

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR APRIL 25, 2023
- Rain will develop in U.S. hard red winter wheat areas today and continue periodically through Friday
- Relief from long term drought is expected
- Follow up rain is expected in the U.S. Central and southern Plains during May
- West Texas will not get much rain from this week’s rain, but showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase with time during May
- U.S. temperatures in the Plains and eastern states will be below normal over the coming week with eastern parts of the nation still cooler biased next week
- Cool conditions and periodic precipitation will keep spring fieldwork slow, but it will be good for wheat development
- No changes in South America weather were noted overnight
- Drought continues in Spain and North Africa with little opportunity for change
- The remainder of Europe and the western CIS is experiencing great spring weather
- Kazakhstan and southern parts of Russia’s eastern New Lands are drying down, but the environment is great for spring planting
- China weather will continue favorable for winter and spring crops the next two weeks
- India will experience some harvest disrupting showers and thunderstorms during the next ten days; temperatures will be milder than usual in parts of the nation
- Southern Australia precipitation is expected to be sporadic for a while with southeastern areas wettest
- Interior Western Australia will need greater rain in May
- Cotton areas from Mali to Burkina Faso remain drier than usual and rain is needed for planting
- Recent showers in Thailand and Vietnam has eased some dryness, but more rain is needed
