WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 17, 2023
- Argentina’s rain potential for late this week and next week is still very good and wheat planting should proceed normally
- No change in Brazil’s weather outlook was noted overnight with Safrinha crop areas drying down normally
- There is no risk of frost or freezes in the next two weeks in any grain, coffee or sugarcane production area
- China’s dryness in Inner Mongolia will remain in place with some potential expansion to the southwest into Shanxi over time, but for now only northern Hebei is included in the dry bias associated with the Inner Mongolia dryness
- Russia and Ukraine weather is still expected to be favorable over the next ten days to two weeks with timely rain expected
- Russia’s eastern New Lands and a part of northern Kazakhstan may dry down again as time moves along, though it will be gradual
- Thailand and immediate neighboring areas are back into a net drying mode for the next several days with rain resuming late in the weekend and especially next week
- Water supply is low and concern about El Nino reducing rainfall during the monsoon this year continues to be a key concern
- Indonesia and Malaysia rainfall and soil moisture are still supporting crops favorably
- Canada’s drought region in the Prairies is not likely to change much over the next week and rainfall in the second week is expected to be a little too sporadic and light for a serious bout of relief, although some rain may fall
- Ontario and Quebec will be impacted by some frost and freezes in the coming week, but permanent damage to wheat is not likely and most of the corn and soybean crops are just now beginning to be planted
- Frost in eastern Canada’s Prairies and in part of North Dakota and Minnesota later this week is not expected to induce any permanent damage for crops
- U.S. Midwest, Delta and southeastern states have nearly ideal soil moisture and weather will continue to be well mixed with timely rainfall and seasonable to slightly warmer than usual temperatures expected
- Warming in late May and early June will accelerate drying rates in some areas and that should be monitored
- West-central and southwestern U.S. Plains rainfall will occur more often in the next ten days

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 16, 2023
- Not many changes overnight
- Canada’s Prairies will continue dry for another week, but rain potentials may rise in “some” of the driest areas in the west during the latter days of May
- Frost and freezes will occur Wednesday morning in Ontario and Quebec, Canada without much Permanent impact on crops
- Frost and a few light freezes will also impact eastern Canada’s Prairies briefly Thursday and Friday without much impact on crops
- Patches of light frost may also impact North Dakota and parts of Northern Minnesota Friday without much impact on crops
- Rain will develop in the central and southern Plains in the second half of this week with Oklahoma, parts of Kansas, the Texas Panhandle and southeastern Colorado wettest; the moisture will be good for all crops
- Additional scattered showers and thunderstorms will impact the southwestern Plains (including West Texas) late this weekend into early next week
- Argentina is still expected to see a series of disturbances that will bring rain to wheat areas for planting moisture late this week into next week
- Center west and center south Brazil will continue seasonably dry over the next ten days
- Europe will remain wettest in the south during the next ten days with net dry and good field progress in the north
- North Africa is still expecting rain later this week and into the weekend, but it will come too late for Morocco and NW Algeria
- A good mix of weather will continue in much of Asia; including the CIS, China and India, although southern China will be a little too wet at times
- Australia rain in far southeastern Queensland and far northeastern New South Wales Monday was good for winter crop planting and establishment; most other areas in Australia will experience net drying for a while, although some coastal showers are likely
- Indonesia and Malaysia rainfall will decrease next week leading to some net drying
- Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia will turn wetter again after the next few days of net drying

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 15, 2023
- Rain was removed for West Texas this week as the European model which was so insistent that rain was going to fall heavily in this coming week backed off the outlook during the weekend. The GFS model also backed out of some of its rain predicted
- Opportunities for rain will return to the southwestern Plains late this week and next week
- Weekend precipitation was heavy in southwestern Minnesota, northern Iowa, northern Nebraska, central Oklahoma and central and southern Texas; many areas that had been a little too dry got relief
- Kansas was left dry during the weekend, but should get rain this week – first in the east early this week and then in the west late this week and into the weekend
- Canada’s Prairies in western Saskatchewan and east-central Alberta will remain in a drought for the next ten days with little to no rain and warm temperatures prevailing
- Other areas in the Prairies will also dry down, but soil moisture is better in those areas
- There is potential for frost and a light freeze or two in the eastern Canada Prairies late this week and frost would be possible in a few counties in North Dakota and northern Minnesota, although the impact should be low in all areas
- All U.S. crop areas will get rain at one time or another in the next ten days supporting early season crop development and yet enough dry weather will support planting at times
- Argentina wheat areas will get rain periodically starting in the second half of this week and continuing through next week
- Brazil’s center west and center south crop areas will be dry biased for the next ten days which is normal for this time of year
- South-central Europe will continue to receive too much rain too often during the next week to ten days
- Australia wheat, barley and canola areas will be left drier than usual in the next ten days
- Tropical Cyclone Mocha moved into northwestern Myanmar Sunday morning producing 122 mph wind speeds, torrential rain and flooding

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 12, 2023
- Somewhat greater rain was advertised in North Africa during the week next week and into the following weekend, although some of that moisture is coming a little late to seriously change wheat and barley production
- Abundant rain will continue to impact south-central Europe during the coming week as well
- Argentina is advertised a little wetter beginning late next week and continuing through the following weekend and the moisture may be good for winter wheat planting
- Brazil’s center south and center west crop areas will be dry through the next ten days which is not unusual at this time of year, although the ground is firming up
- Rain will fall in Rio Grande do Sul and Paraguay late next week and into the following weekend bolstering soil moisture once again
- The ECMWF model is promoting rain in West Texas from Saturday through Tuesday of next week with significant amounts expected
- The GFS is less wet, but planting moisture will be substantially improved for corn, sorghum and cotton
- Beneficial moisture has already brought notable relief to dryness in southwestern Nebraska, northwestern Kansas and northeastern Colorado and it is now raining favorably in the western Dakotas, eastern Montana and southeastern Saskatchewan where a notable boost in precipitation is also expected
- U.S. Midwest, Delta and southeastern states will see a favorable mix of moisture
- Recent rain in Alberta, Canada has brought on pockets of relief and more rain is needed, but not likely for a while
- Canada’s Prairies will be dry and unusually warm to hot after rain ends in the southeast Saturday for most of the following week
- Ontario and Quebec are warming up beneficially for corn and soybean planting
- India, China, Australia and South Africa weather has not changed much from that suggested Thursday

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 11, 2023
- Argentina will trend a little wetter late next week and into the following weekend
- No changes in Brazil’s drier bias was noted, although Rio Grande do Sul may also experience a boost in rain late next week
- West Texas rainfall is still expected to be significant enough this weekend and next week for an improvement in planting conditions
- Moderate to locally heavy rain in eastern Montana and the western Dakotas as well as southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba tonight through Sunday will bolster soil moisture in some areas that are still drier than usual
- Relief from dryness is also expected in eastern South Dakota and southern Minnesota with southwestern Minnesota already reporting some rainfall over 1.00 inch in the past 24 hours
- Eastern U.S. Midwest and southeastern states will receive periodic rain of light intensity that will prove to be ideal for allowing more fieldwork to occur while maintaining a favorable moisture profile in the soil
- Parts of Central Texas will experience flooding rain this weekend with the wet bias prevailing into next week
- Northeastern Colorado, northwestern Kansas and southwestern Nebraska received significant rain overnight and more is expected that may eventually lead to a dramatic improvement in soil moisture with local flooding possible for a brief period of time
- South-central Europe is still expected to be a little too wet in the coming week
- Northern Africa is a little wetter in today’s forecast relative to that of Wednesday, although the moisture increase may come too late for a serious improvement in durum wheat production
- Most of the western CIS, China, India, South Africa and Australia weather outlooks changed little overnight

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 10, 2023
- Western Canada’s Prairies and British Columbia will be facing a new heatwave this weekend into early next week
- A large part of the Prairies will need significant rain following the heatwave
- Rain in Canada’s Prairies will be restricted over the next ten days with the greatest rain Friday into the weekend in southeastern most Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba
- U.S. Northern Plains rainfall is expected to be widespread and significant late this week and into the weekend with field working delays likely for a little while, but the moisture will be good for the western Dakotas and immediate neighboring areas where the soil is still a little dry
- Southeastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota as well as eastern Nebraska will also benefit from some of this rain
- Field working delays are likely in eastern North Dakota and Minnesota
- Texas rainfall is still advertised to be substantial this weekend with most of West Texas getting significant rain that will bolster soil moisture for improved planting potentials in corn, sorghum and cotton areas
- Lighter than usual precipitation is still expected in the lower and eastern Midwest during the next ten days, although sufficient rain will fall to support aggressive planting and a favorable environment for crop emergence and establishment
- Eastern parts of the U.S. Delta and the southeastern states will experience a good mix of rain and sunshine with planting to accelerate in many areas that were experiencing slow progress previously
- Argentina rainfall is still advertised to be minimal during the next ten days
- Brazil weather will continue supporting a general dry down in field conditions in most Safrinha corn and cotton areas which is normal for this time of year, but some timely rain will soon be needed for late planted crops
- Drying is expected in portions of Russia over the next ten days, but the impact will be mostly good for crops
- Some relief to dryness is expected in northern Kazakhstan and neighboring areas of Russia
- No changes in India, China or Australia weather was noted overnight
- Italy and the western Balkan Countries of Europe are still expecting heavy rain and some flooding in the next ten days
- Some relief from dryness is expected in eastern Spain, northeastern Algeria and northern Tunisia mostly this weekend, but sooner in Tunisia and Algeria

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 9, 2023
- U.S. Northern Plains rainfall is expected to become significant late this week bolstering topsoil moisture for long term use to spring and summer crops from in the western Dakotas, but further delaying fieldwork in eastern North Dakota and parts of Minnesota
- U.S. Southern Plains rainfall expected in this coming week will prove to be great for sorghum, corn and cotton planting, but it may fall a little too late for winter wheat and there may be some hail and localized flooding in Texas; central Texas may get excessive rainfall
- U.S. Midwest rainfall will be timely and supportive of spring planting, but many areas will receive lighter than usual amounts maintaining a trend already established in April
- U.S. Delta will be plenty wet for a while
- U.S. southeastern states will experience some drying for a while which may help get fieldwork caught up
- Canada’s central Prairies will get very little rain over the next ten days
- No changes in South America today with rainfall limited in Argentina and both center west and center south Brazil
- South-central Europe will get too much moisture over the next ten days with flooding expected from Italy and the eastern Adriatic Sea region into the Alps and immediate neighboring areas
- “Some” rain will fall in eastern Spain, northeastern Algeria and northern Tunisia during the next ten days offering a little relief from dryness
- Northern Kazakhstan and neighboring areas of Russia’s eastern New Lands will get relief from dryness in the coming week
- China’s greatest rain will be in the southwest for a while and drought relief is likely in Yunnan
- Winter, spring and summer crop conditions in east-central and northeastern China will be fine for a while
- Australia rainfall will occur lightly and periodically in key winter crop areas helping to support planting and establishment of many winter crops

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 8, 2023
- Excessive heat and dryness stressed coffee, sugarcane, corn and other crops in mainland areas of Southeast Asia during the weekend
- The heat will be reduced as showers and thunderstorms increase this week
- China experienced flooding rain in southern rapeseed and rice production areas causing some damage to crops in northwestern Fujian and Jiangxi where more than 28 inches of rain fell since Friday
- Yunnan, China’s drought may be eased late this week and into the weekend as needed rain falls
- Xinjiang China’s cotton and corn areas were unseasonably cold during the weekend and some warming is expected this week
- Rain is advertised in northeastern Algeria and northern Tunisia this week
- Moderate to heavy rain will occur from Italy and the western Balkan Countries to France and the U.K. in the next week to ten days
- Spain will remain drier biased except for showers along the central east coast
- A part of northern Kazakhstan and neighboring areas of Russia will get rain this week easing some recent dryness, although more will be needed in parts of the region
