WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 30, 2023
- Australia rainfall has been increased for its winter wheat, barley and canola production areas over the next ten days favoring better winter crop emergence and establishment
- U.S. Midwest (east of the Mississippi River) rainfall will remain lighter than usual for the next week to possibly ten days with warm temperatures likely into the weekend
- Upper U.S. Midwest afternoon temperatures will rise into the 80s and lower 90s Fahrenheit periodically over the coming week while upper 70s and 80s occur in most other areas
- U.S. Delta and southeastern states will experience net drying as well
- Showers and thunderstorms are expected frequently in the U.S. Plains and a part of Canada’s Prairies over the next ten days
- Alberta’s drought region is not likely to get more than a few blotchy showers for a while this week
- Rain will fall in northern and western Alberta and across Saskatchewan periodically in this coming week with Thursday into the weekend wettest
- Southern Manitoba is becoming a little too dry
- Argentina wheat planting will advance well this week, although rain is still needed in the southwest
- Some U.S. hard red winter wheat areas are becoming too wet and some grain quality concerns are rising in the south
- Brazil’s Safrinha crop conditions are rated favorably, although rain is needed in Mato Grosso cotton areas
- Northern India will stay wetter than usual for a little while this week while monsoonal rainfall in the south is delayed by a couple of weeks
- China experienced some very heavy rain in the northern Yangtze River Basin during the weekend and plenty of rain fell in the North China Plain and Yellow River Basin as well supporting long term summer crop prospects, but slowing wheat harvesting
- South Africa will get some timely rain for wheat establishment in this coming week
- Northern Europe will continue unusually dry while southern Europe is wet along with North Africa

- Showers and thunderstorms are expected frequently in the U.S. Plains and a part of Canada’s Prairies over the next ten days

- Rain will fall in northern and western Alberta and across Saskatchewan periodically in this coming week with Thursday into the weekend wettest

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 26, 2023
- Not many changes overnight
- Alberta Canada’s drought region and western Saskatchewan may have an opportunity for rain during the last part of next week and into the following weekend
- U.S. Midwest will continue drier than usual over the next ten days with the heart of the Midwest possibly receiving minimal amounts of moisture for two full weeks
- Rain will continue to fall frequently in the U.S. west-central and southwestern Plains during the next ten days with some of that expected to expand northwest into Montana, Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan in time
- Argentina soil moisture is more favorable for wheat planting and additional rain in the next two weeks will perpetuate the favorable environment except in the southwest where net drying is still possible
- Northern Europe will continue drier than usual for at least the next ten days, although temperatures will not be excessively warm
- Southern Europe will continue to receive frequent rain along with parts of North Africa
- Eastern Russia’s New Lands will be dry biased and warm for one more week and then some showers and a chance for rain will scatter across parts of the region in the second week of the outlook
- Western Ukraine, Poland, Belarus and the Baltic States will continue dry biased during the next ten days, although soil moisture is still sufficient to carry on normal crop development
- No big changes were noted for India, China or Australia
- Mainland areas of Southeast Asia will trend wetter
- Today’s forecast for Malaysia and Indonesia is a little wetter than that of earlier this week in the second week of the forecast

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 25, 2023
- Rain will bring dryness relief to Saskatchewan and northwestern Manitoba, Canada over the next several days
- Alberta, Canada’s drought areas “may” get some needed rain in early June, although the GFS model run this morning has suggested significant rain may occur there this weekend and early next week – confidence in the GFS outlook is a little low
- U.S. Midwest weather will continue drier than usual for another week and then scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely, though resulting rainfall may continue lighter than usual
- West Texas received some welcome rain overnight and more is expected today and again Saturday night with a few other sporadic showers expected during the balance of the next two weeks
- Planting moisture is improving, but subsoil moisture will continue low leaving concern about the long term outlook for dryland crops
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas will get periodic showers and thunderstorms over the next week to ten days with a little worry over crop quality in some of the wetter areas
- Northern Europe will be notably drier biased over the next ten days while the south continues to get waves of rain
- Russia’s eastern New Lands are advertised to get some rain in early June after a dry finish to May
- Northern India will trend wetter than usual this weekend into early next week disrupting some fieldwork, but perhaps benefiting early cotton development
- China weather will continue well mixed for all crops
- Southern Australia rainfall will be timely in the next week to ten days, despite lighter than usual
- Early monsoon rainfall will be abundant in Kerala, India and along the coast of Myanmar during the next couple of weeks
- Interior Thailand crop area will get needed rain, but may continue to see lighter than usual rain amounts for a while
- Indonesia and Malaysia rainfall will be in decline next week and on into the first half of June

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 24, 2023
- Super typhoon Mawar has moved past Guam after producing incredibly strong wind, up to 25 inches of rain and brought a notable storm surge inland; damage assessments will begin later today as the storm clears the region
- Canada’s central and eastern Prairies will get rain over the next seven days bolstering topsoil moisture for improved spring and summer crop planting, emergence and establishment
- Center west Brazil will remain seasonably dry with Mato Grosso and Goias needing a little more rain to support late season cotton and the most immature corn
- Rain expected in Sao Paulo, Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul in the coming week will be great for winter wheat and for late reproducing and filling Safrinha corn; there is no threatening cold coming any time soon.
- Argentina still needs rain in its westernmost wheat production areas, but planting moisture elsewhere is expected to be good especially after the next wave of rain occurs
- U.S southwestern Plains will see frequent showers and thunderstorms
- Some wheat areas in Texas and Oklahoma could encounter some wheat quality issues because of rain , but not in Kansas
- U.S. Midwest will see limited rainfall over the next ten days
- Australia still needs greater rainfall in Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland, though amounts in the next ten days will be limited
- Northern India will be unusually wet
- China weather remains favorable as is much of central and southern Europe
- Northwestern Europe will continue to dry down
- Russia’s New Lands near and east of the Ural Mountains will dry down over the next ten days
- Rain in North Africa and Spain has improved topsoil moisture
- Increasing rain is predicted for Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos
- Much less rain is expected in Indonesia and Malaysia this weekend and especially next week

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 23, 2023
- Not many changes overnight
- Western Alberta, Canada has begun to receive significant rain, but the drought areas in the east have only reported light showers
- Saskatchewan, Canada rainfall advertised for Wednesday into Friday of this week has been increased while that which occurs in Manitoba is mostly unchanged
- Canada Prairies’ drought areas will get a few showers in the coming week, but no generalized soaking rain is likely
- Frost and freezes returned to Quebec, Canada overnight with limited impact other than to restrict wheat development
- U.S. Midwest is still expected to experience net drying over the coming week to ten days
- U.S. Southern Plains will experience frequent rain the remainder of this week and into next week raising some wheat quality concerns, but favoring summer crop development
- The moisture will be good for reproducing and filling wheat in Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado
- Northern U.S. Plains will experience a good mix of rain and sunshine, although frequent precipitation in North Dakota may slow planting progress
- Brazil’s Safrinha corn areas will get some timely rain late in this coming weekend and early next week ensuring good crop development in the late planted areas of Parana, Mato Grosso do Sul and Sao Paulo
- Some of Brazil’s rain will briefly reach sugarcane, citrus and coffee areas in Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo this weekend slowing crop maturation and harvesting
- Argentina’s western wheat areas need more rain and showers expected will be limited in the next ten days
- Eastern Russia’s New Lands will dry down over the next week to ten days and temperatures will become very warm
- China weather will be favorably mixed
- Northern India will become wetter than usual later this week and into the weekend, though the moisture will be good for early season cotton development
- Australia will continue to get periodic rain near the southern coast while interior Western and South Australia are dry biased over the next ten days along with Queensland and northern New South Wales
- Typhoon Mawar will damage Guam and the southern Mariana Islands later today and Wednesday with sustained wind speeds to 155 mph and stronger gusts possibly approaching 190 mph. A huge storm surge is expected too and rainfall of 10-20 inches.
- Northern Europe will be drying down as will western Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic States

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 19, 2023
- Frost and freezes occurred this morning in western North Dakota and surrounding areas; extreme lows slipped to 28 Fahrenheit
- Frost in Canada’s Prairies overnight had a limited impact
- Drying is likely in the northern U.S. Plains and portions of Canada’s Prairies through the weekend and into early next week with warming temperatures that will help accelerate drying and induce better planting conditions in the wetter areas
- Central and some western parts of the U.S. Midwest will experience net drying over the next ten days due to restricted rainfall and warm temperatures
- Some rain of significance fell in Kansas and the Texas Panhandle overnight lifting topsoil moisture in favor of better crop development in winter and summer crop areas
- Argentina rainfall will benefit wheat planting over the next ten days
- Safrinha corn and cotton areas in Brazil will be dry over the next ten days to two weeks which is normal
- Southern Brazil temperatures may cool down in early June
- Drying is expected in Russia’s New Lands over the coming week with temperatures trending warmer than usual
- China weather will be well mixed with rain and sunshine over the next ten days, although dryness will remain in parts of Inner Mongolia
- Northeastern Xinjiang, China will experience showers and milder than usual weather through the next ten days
- Western Xinjiang, China will cool down for a little while in the coming week after a few days of beneficial warmth
- Increasing rainfall is expected next week in Thailand and other mainland areas of Southeast Asia where it has been dry
- Rain will be abundant in Indonesia and Malaysia during the next ten days
- Europe weather will be favorable over the next ten days with the greatest precipitation in the south
- North Africa is still anticipating greater than usual rain in the coming week that will come too late for crops
- Australia rainfall will be limited for the next ten days with coastal Victoria being the wettest area

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR MAY 18, 2023
- U.S. High Plains region will receive periodic rainfall through the next ten days from West Texas to western Nebraska
- Much of the moisture will come late for winter wheat, but it will be good for summer crops
- Favorable U.S. Midwest, Delta and southeastern states weather will continue over the next ten days favoring fieldwork and crop development
- Warming in late May and early June will accelerate drying rates in some areas and that should be monitored
- Canada’s drought area of east-central and interior southern Alberta and western Saskatchewan will get no significant relief for the next ten days
- Western and northern Alberta will receive heavy rainfall next week easing dryness in those areas, but the moisture should stay out of the drought region
- Argentina’s rain potential for late this week and next week is still very good and wheat planting should proceed normally
- No change in Brazil’s weather outlook was noted overnight with Safrinha crop areas drying down normally
- There is no risk of frost or freezes in the next two weeks in any grain, coffee or sugarcane production area
- China’s dryness in Inner Mongolia will remain in place with some potential expansion to the southwest into Shanxi over time, but for now only northern Hebei is included in the dry bias associated with the Inner Mongolia dryness
- Russia and Ukraine weather is still expected to be favorable over the next ten days to two weeks with timely rain expected
- Russia’s eastern New Lands and a part of northern Kazakhstan may dry down again as time moves along, though it will be gradual
- Thailand and immediate neighboring areas are back into a net drying mode for the next several days with rain resuming late in the weekend and especially next week
- Water supply is low and concern about El Nino reducing rainfall during the monsoon this year continues to be a key concern
- Indonesia and Malaysia rainfall and soil moisture are still supporting crops favorably
- Ontario and Quebec were impacted by some frost and freezes today, but permanent damage to wheat was not suspected and most of the corn and soybean crops are just beginning to be planted
- Frost is expected from western North Dakota to southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada tonight with a few light freezes expected as well; the impact on crops should be minimal
- Some frost and light freezes occurred this morning in interior eastern Alberta without permanently damaging crops
