WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPTEMBER 22, 2023
- 06z GFS model was too wet for the U.S. Midwest in the second week of the forecast this morning
- Welcome rain will fall in the northern Plains for wheat planting, emergence and establishment, although some disruption to harvesting is expected
- Western U.S. Corn and Soybean Belt rainfall this weekend will help moisten the topsoil, but no serious runoff is expected that would raise river levels
- Greater rain is still advertised for center west and center south Brazil in early October, although some of the increases suggested by the GFS model seemed overdone
- Western Argentina drought relief is unlikely to be very great, although a few showers will occur this weekend
- South Australia remains drier than usual through the next ten days, although the GFS attempted to increase second week rainfall in the east
- No change in the Black Sea region dryness was suggested over the next ten days, although there is some suggested change for greater rain in days 11-15, though confidence is low
- China’s weather will be wet this weekend into early next week from eastern Sichuan to Henan; other areas will experience a more favorable opportunity for some net drying.
- Rainy weather is expected in the North Sea countries of Europe this weekend into next week as well as in the eastern Adriatic Sea region and neighboring western Balkan Countries
- The remainder of eastern Europe will continue dry out
- India’s late season monsoon rainfall is expected to continue performing well
- Mexico’s drought worsened in the most recent two weeks, despite a few areas of greater rain in the west; unirrigated crops may not be performing well this year
- Southeast Asia rainfall has decreased once again
- Tropical Cyclones will evolve in many areas in the western Pacific Ocean, South China Sea and Indian Ocean next week and into the following weekend
- Subtropical storm development is expected off the U.S. Carolina coast today and it will move into North Carolina and Virginia this weekend producing heavy rain and windy conditions, but damage is not likely to be very great; some flooding will impact the middle Atlantic Coast region.

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPTEMBER 21, 2023
- Significant rain is still projected for the northern U.S. Plains and upper Midwest Friday through Sunday delaying fieldwork briefly
- Canada’s Prairies “may” trend a little wetter in the second week of the forecast, but confidence is low
- A disturbance forming off the lower east coast of the United States may acquire tropical or subtropical characteristics and the system may bring heavy rain to North Carolina, Virginia and other middle Atlantic Coastal areas during the weekend
- Interior U.S. southeastern states and Delta will be dry until next week when a few showers are expected
- Western U.S. hard red winter wheat areas will dry down over the next ten days, though fieldwork will continue to advance
- Eastern U.S. Midwest precipitation will be restricted for much of the next ten days
- Argentina may see a few showers and thunderstorms from southern Cordoba into La Pampa and Buenos Aires this weekend into early next week; no general soaking is expected, but the showers should be welcome and helpful in easing dryness in at least some areas
- Brazil’s center west and center south crop areas should see at least some increase in shower and thunderstorm activity in the last days of September and first days of October, though no general soaking is likely
- Far southern Brazil, northern Uruguay and northeastern Argentina will remain wet over the next ten days
- Parana and southern Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil rainfall may increase late next week
- Russia’s Southern Region and Ukraine are still advertised to be dry for at least ten days and probably two weeks with well above normal temperatures
- India rainfall has been improving and will continue favorably distributed over the next ten days to two weeks with central and eastern areas wettest, although a boost in rainfall is advertised for the far south
- Australia rainfall is still advertised to be lighter than usual over the next ten days and perhaps longer with northern winter crop areas staying dry
- China will see heavy rain from late this week into next week from northern Guizhou, eastern Sichuan and southern Shaanxi to western Henan and Hubei where some flooding will be possible
- Other areas in China will see a favorable mix of rain and sunshine
- South Africa late weekend rain and that which occurs next week will bolster soil moisture improving wheat, barley and canola reproductive potential
- Heavy rain is expected this weekend in the western Balkan Countries of Europe delaying fieldwork and inducing some flood potential

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPTEMBER 20, 2023
- Dryness concerns remain in Russia’s Southern Region, Ukraine and the Volga River Basin of Russia where winter crop planting is advancing, but soil moisture is low resulting in possibly some poor emergence and establishment
- Rain is unlikely to fall significantly through the first days of October
- Australia’s winter crop areas continue to be subjected to poor precipitation and this trend will extend for another ten days
- Unirrigated northern crops are reproducing under poor conditions and yields will be down considerably
- Argentina will get some moisture Friday into Saturday and again about one week later, but resulting rainfall may not be enough to seriously change the poor winter crop conditions in some areas
- Sunseed and early corn planting progress is expected to remain sluggish
- Drought in Canada continues to support excellent harvest weather, but fear over poor soil moisture during the winter is rising since the ground usually freezes up in the November through March period preventing much moisture absorption
- Not much precipitation is expected for a while
- Southeastern Europe continues to dry out raising the need for winter crop planting moisture, but spring and summer harvest progress is advancing well
- Pre-monsoonal showers and thunderstorms in Brazil’s center west and center south is expected to begin in early October, but a drier bias should prevail until then
- U.S. Northern Plains and western Corn Belt will receive rain late this week and through the weekend slowing summer crop maturation and early harvest progress
- Eastern U.S. Midwest weather will be drier than usual for a while favoring summer crop maturation and early harvesting
- A tropical or subtropical low pressure center is still expected to evolve off the lower U.S. east coast late this week producing rain for the Carolinas, Virginia and other middle Atlantic Coast States, but damaging wind is unlikely

- Western Madhya Pradesh, northeastern Maharashtra and Gujarat, India received heavy rain during the weekend and today producing some flooding with rainfall of 5.00 to 11.85 inches through dawn today (Monday)
- More flooding occurred in Guangdong, China during the weekend with more than 9.00 inches resulting
- Australia is advertised to be drier than usual for much of this week
- Brazil’s center west and center south crop areas will experience greater rain at the end of September and early October which is normal and typical of El Nino years
- Western Argentina will experience some showers late this week and more as we move closer to the end of this month
- Central and interior northern Thailand received heavy rainfall during the weekend
- Weekend frost and freezes impacted central South Africa wheat and barley areas during the weekend
- East-central China will turn wetter for a while early this week before drier weather evolves late this week into next week
- Ukraine and Russia’s southern region will continue drier than usual for the next ten days
- Europe weather will be wetter biased in the west and north for a little while this week while the southeast is drier biased
- Central Canada’s Prairies will be dry biased over the next ten days

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPTEMBER 15, 2023
- Very little change occurred overnight
- Northern Australia winter crop areas are to remain dry during the next two weeks while reproduction and filling of small grains continues; unirrigated spring planting may be slowed in the east until significant rain falls
- Southern Australia rainfall and/or favorable soil moisture will be sufficient to maintain mostly good crop conditions in southern Western Australia and Victoria as well as southeastern South Australia
- China will stay wet in the south with the southern coastal provinces staying too wet
- A more favorable mix of weather is expected in other parts of China
- Western Argentina will remain drier than usual over the next week to ten days
- Eastern Argentina, Uruguay, southern Brazil and southern Paraguay will remain plenty wet for a while, although rain frequency and intensity will be greatly diminished
- Center west and center south Brazil showers will be infrequent and light, though a boost in rainfall should evolve in late September and October to support early season soybean and first corn planting progress
- Northwestern India will receive some welcome rain this weekend into next week providing one last boost in soil moisture before the monsoon begins to withdraw
- China weather in the north should be favorably mixed for summer crop maturation and future wheat planting, but greater drying over a longer period of time may be needed to induce the best conditions
- U.S. Midwest weather will trend wetter next week and especially in the September 22-28 period
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas will get additional rain in the next week to ten days favoring additional improvements for wheat planting and establishment, although the southern and eastern parts of the region will be most favored for the greatest rain
- U.S. Delta will be dry biased for another week before rain chances improve
- A good mix of weather is expected in the southeastern U.S. over the next two weeks
- Texas rainfall was significant from central parts of West Texas into the Blacklands Thursday and overnight with another couple of days of rain expected in the southern Plains before drier weather resumes
- Canada’s Prairies harvest weather will be best in this coming week and then rain delays may develop in the east and south, although today’s forecast is less wet than that of Thursday
- Europe is still expected to trend wetter over the next ten days
- Russia’s Southern Region and a part of Ukraine will continue drier biased and in need of additional rain

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR SEPTEMBER 13, 2023
- Northwestern India will begin to see increased rainfall this weekend and especially next week improving cotton, rice, groundnut and other crops after an extended period of dry weather
- Australia’s reproducing winter crops in Queensland northern New South Wales and northern Western Australia will not receive significant rain into the latter part of this month resulting in lower yields for unirrigated fields
- Southern Australia winter crop conditions will remain in good shape with southwestern Western Australia wettest for a while
- Western Argentina wheat, corn and sunseed areas will remain dry biased for ten days
- Southern Brazil will get rain today and then turn drier for a little while. Additional rain will evolve early next week
- Seasonal rains are expected to increase in northern South America during the next few weeks
- U.S. hard red winter wheat areas have benefited from rain this week and improved planting and emergence conditions will result as additional rain falls periodically in the region over the coming ten days
- Restricted U.S. Midwest rainfall will further promote summer crop maturation and early season harvest progress around showers through early next week
- U.S. Midwest weather will trend wetter next week and into late month slowing crop maturation and harvest progress, although no heavy rainfall is expected
- Canada’s Prairies may turn wetter near and after September 20 slowing harvest progress and raising soil moisture for use in 2024
- Frost and freezes may evolve in Alberta, Canada Sep. 20-22, but this is later than usual
- Hurricane Lee should lose its tropical characteristics as the storm bears down on Maine and New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada this weekend, but tropical storm force wind will impact many areas along with a notable storm surge and heavy rainfall
- Europe rainfall will be greatest in the west and north next week, but a favorable mix of rain and sunshine is likely in most areas until then
- CIS crop weather will continue drier than usual in Russia’s Southern Region and Volga River Basin for the next ten days
- Ukraine winter crop areas will get some precipitation in the next two weeks
- Northern Kazakhstan and southern Russia spring wheat and sunseed areas are wetter than usual raising a little crop quality concern
