WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR AUGUST 17, 2023
- Hurricane Hilary was located 320 miles southwest of Manzaillo, Mexico at 1200 UTC and will make headlines over the next few days
- Hurricane Hilary will induce flooding and wind damage in northern Baja California this weekend
- Flooding rain will impact southern California and the southern U.S. Great Basin late this weekend, as well
- Moisture from Hurricane Hilary will eventually reach southern Canada’s Prairies Sunday and especially Monday bringing relief to drought, but heavy rain does not appear very likely
- U.S. Midwest will experience nine days of dry weather
- U.S. Plains and western Corn and Soybean Belt will experience hot temperatures this weekend through the middle part of next week stressing livestock and some crops; Highest temperatures of 100 to 110 and local readings to 113 are likely from central Texas to South Dakota and 95 to 105 from Minnesota and western Wisconsin to the Delta
- Argentina showers in the western wheat areas today will be a disappointment with no serious change in drought conditions
- Southern Brazil, Uruguay, eastern Argentina and southern Paraguay will get rain Friday and Saturday with a little follow up moisture from Mato Grosso do Sul to Parana and Sao Paulo Sunday – the moisture will be good for wheat and first season corn planting in Brazil
- Europe will be hot with limited rainfall for one more week and then turn cooler and wetter
- Southern Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine will be warm and dry biased for another several days and then some cooling is likely
- China will remain plenty wet
- Northwestern India will continue drying out along with Pakistan raising the potential for crop stress
- Southern Australia will continue to get some occasional rain with the southeast most favored
- Queensland and northern New South Wales and northern parts of Western Australia will continue drying out
- Erratic rainfall will continue in Southeast Asia
