WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR OCTOBER 5, 2023

• Moderate to severe drought continues across much of Mexico with Tropical Storm Lidia and possibly one other tropical disturbance possibly moving inland in western parts of the nation next week to offer some relief
• Southeastern Australia rainfall wound down Wednesday with two-day rain totals of 0.30 to 0.62 inch in the northern one-third of New South Wales and 0.60 to 1.61 inches in the southern two-thirds of the state; central Victoria received 1.41 to 3.27 inches of rain with the mountainous region of eastern Victoria getting 3.50 to 9.29 inches resulting in flooding
  • Southeastern Queensland reported 0.05 to 0.47 inch of rain poor coverage of amounts over 0.30 inch
• Heavy rain and flooding occurred in southern Oklahoma into the Texas Blacklands and northeast into southwestern Arkansas overnight; rain totals of 3.00 to 9.86 inches occurred near the Texas/Arkansas border resulting in serious flooding
  • Most of the Texas Blacklands and southern Oklahoma reported 2.00 to 3.00 inches with local totals over 4.00 inches
• Rain is expected to evolve in the driest areas of Ukraine and Russia’s Southern Region late this weekend and especially next week
• Western Australia will continue dry for at least another ten days
• Europe will continue drier biased in the west-central, southwest, central and far southeast during the next week 
• U.S. central and eastern Midwest and eastern states will experience cooler weather and at least one bout of rain during the Oct. 13-19 period
• Canada’s Prairies will see dry and warmer weather after rain and wet snow end Friday morning in the east
• Typhoon Koinu impacted Taiwan in the past 24 hours with flooding rain and excessive wind and the system is now expected to be close to the southern China coast for a few days, but no landfall is presently expected
• Excessive rain and windy conditions will impact eastern Canada this weekend and early next week as Tropical Storm Philippe merges with an upper level low pressure system over Ontario and Quebec bringing fieldwork to a halt
• Frost and freezes will impact the central and northern U.S. Plains and Canada’s Prairies the next two nights, but no significant crop impact is expected
• Argentina dryness will remain despite a few showers early next week 
• No changes are expected in Brazil with the south staying too wet in the coming week while center west crop areas see erratic rainfall of lighter than usual intensity
